Replacements for Givens.

I am of the belief that Givens will be gone. I see it as a Johnny Damon type thing. The Pats have placed a certain $ value on Givens and/or a #2 receiver, and that another team out there will come in offereing more that he will not pass up on. That being said, I think we should look into FA to replace him at the #2 spot as the draft class is not a strong this year. I would like to see the Pats re-sign Brown and Davis, but we still need a solid #2. Here are some names:

Joe Jurevicious
Antonio Bryant
Jabar Gaffney
Rod Gardner
Kevin Johnson

All of these guys have had success and are around, if not bigger then Givens. Plus most should be under 3 mil per year, which is the limit I think the Pats will offer Givens. But, more then anything I am a homer and is not very up to date on players outside of NE, expect for what I see on the stat sheet.

One last thing, anyone think BB will go the route he has done in the previous years and trade a late first day draft pick for a veteren WR, alla Washington, Dillon and Starks. We do have 2 3rd rounder and 2 4th rounders. We can trade on of those and we will still get something back for the compensatory picks for the FA we lost last year. Maybe not a 3rd, but maybe a 4th. I know we can't trade those picks, but it might make up for a pick already traded.

1 - The longterm solution route atempt will be Antonio Bryant. We may not hear about it but I bet we make him a solid offer if he makes it to UFA.

I know what you mean. I wonder if they might fill this need via trade?
I've heard that the draft doesn't have much to offer at WR either. I really hope that they bring Givens back.

McCardell would probably represent a fabulous short term solution since at age 36 he outperformed Givens by a wide margin and appears to be more durable. Unfortunately despite what some sources say he is not a FA. His contract with the Bucs when he was traded (which they were forced to do because he had held out all season) to the Chargers ran thru 2005 and was paying him around $2.5M. But in March of 2005 the Chargers signed him to a 2 year extension. I suppose they could cut him but that seems unlikely since he played in 16 games, had 70 receptions for over 900 yards, and scored 9 TD's in 2005. As BB would say, that's value.

My pick is Andre Davis. He's a much better outside receiver than inside. A full offseason to get back to 100%, study the playbook, and build chemistry with #12 and he'll be a totally different receiver than he was this past season.

Of course, we'd have to sign him.

If we want a good, young WR we either pay out the nose or draft him. Signing a 26 year old really good WR is probably out of our price range. McCardell would be a 1-2 year solution while we hopefully develop a 2nd or 3rd round draft choice.

Im really not concerend for 2006. Between Bethel, Brown, Dwight, Davis, and all the guys we can bring to play alongside Branch, assuming Givens goes, I think we'll be fine.
Its the long term issue that we need to be keyed in on.

As for another player to add, I would love to see Reche Caldwell added. He's shown to potentially be a great kick returner and I think that he'd been good on punt returns as well.

I know Belioli likes Davis the man but in 4 years Davis the WR hasn't shown he can be more than a 3rd or 4th receiver and potential KR. Dwight and Troy are both great fallback players with value in the kicking game (and in Troy's case there is always emergency DB). But there is not a #2 on the roster, and without one Branch is too easily doubled out of the equation altogether (not to mention he has durablility issues of his own). If they indeed build Brady that fortress some of us hope for the TE's could mitigate that somewhat, but we still need a solid #2 at the least.

Apparently you missed the part about all the guys we can bring in.

Ive never bought into the #1, #2, etc thinking. Especially in our offense. If our 2nd and 3rd leading receivers are a guy with 60 and one with 40, thats not a lot different to me than 3 with 35 a piece.
Let them double whoever they want, our offense is based on Brady reading the coverage and finding the receiver. As long as we dont have slugs out there, we'll be fine. BB is not going to go into the season without a full complement of bullets in his gun at WR. We just dont know what it will look like yet, but there are lots of complementary parts already here.

This is talking about interviewing Torrie Cox at the NFL Combine:

Cox said he once got into a fight with former teammate Antonio Bryant. The coaches paid attention then, because Bryant's demeanor had turned them off the year before. "So why'd you fight him?' Cox was asked. He replied, "That mouth of his. Sometimes that mouth of his gets to much." There was laughter followed by, "Torrie, you just went up a notch in our eyes."

Lets not forget the Pats were willing to give Derek Mason 4.5 mill last year. So they will pay a reciever if they believe he is worth it.
