It could be YOUR team - and it some cases, it already has been.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/don_banks/07/06/cheating.nfl/index.html (this one mentions the Patriots cheating allegations but goes on to say that it "goes on a ton in the league").

(and in the sidebar: "Teams are always trying to steal signs and signals off other teams. That's just football. [click] For more of John Clayton's analysis."

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2696227 : "some Dolphins players suggested to the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post that the team "purchased" tapes of the New England offense that provided audio of quarterback Tom Brady making audible and line-blocking calls.

Those players strongly hinted that the tapes were critical in preparing for the game and provided the Dolphins inside information about New England's offensive audible system.

"I've never seen [Brady] so flustered," middle linebacker Zach Thomas said.

The league's response? Pretty much a stifled yawn, since there is no rule prohibiting such film study.

"Reaction around the league office was, 'That's football,' " AFC spokesman Steve Alic said."

Does anyone know if a team has ever been penalized more than the 3rd round pick that Denver was ?

By this time next week, we'll be sitting on a kick ass team (win or lose this week) and two #1s . . . as long as those #1s stay intact I'll be shrugging this off by then.

I edited my post to add some more links... they might say, but AFAIK the Broncos precedent is what we have to work with here. However, we are living in a new era - there is a new sheriff in town and he is looking to make a name for himself as being tough on crime...

There's no doubt that the commissioner likes to make statements - that's the one (and only) thing that makes me nervous about all this.

OTOH he is close with Kraft over all the foreign expansion B.S. I don't say that because I expect him to bend over for Kraft but I do believe he'll take what Kraft says to heart.

Another good link - I'd like to turn this thread into a compendium of links showing the hypocracy rampant in this league as this story unfolds. Please add your links and stories here!
Great link. This sounds familiar :

"When Marty Schottenheimer coached the Cleveland Browns in the late 1980s, he routinely sent a scout to watch the signals opposing teams used to relay messages from coaches to players. When the scout returned, Schottenheimer's staff would watch the game film and match the signals to the plays that followed."

first of all, until i hear Bob Kraft acknowledge all or some of the truth of these accusations and the role that BB may or may not have played, I'm suspending judgment.

assuming that there is some truth here, i agree that the formal penalty will be a lot less than what the more bloodthirsty pundits are calling for. kraft is too powerful, his team makes too much money for the league and he knows where too many bodies are buried for the penalty to be nuts.

this doesn't mean that there won't be a lot of issues to be addressed in the coming weeks.

I was on the Buffalo Jills forum to post a Message about Kevin Everett and saw a thread about the video and checked it out. I told them I wasn't gonna stir up any crap, but that every team does it and if they deny it they're fooling themselves. Some of the responses:

"Yeah... sure dude. Whatever makes you feel better about your FRAUD of a dynasty."

"What a bunch of cheaters!!!

This is ridiculous... that is a real big advantage for them offensively. They should be punished... and punished hard. A statement needs to be made. Football's "dynasty" has now been accused of giving steroids to their players, and cheating during games. What a joke this team is...

**** THE PATS."

"sorry dude, some organizations have a little more class than that"
