While Obama takes credit please remember what was said in the past.

“But right now what we have is, I think by all accounts, a disaster unfolding in Iraq. We all have a responsibility, Democrats and Republicans, Congress and the White House, to make sure that we can come up with the best strategy. I don't think the president's strategy is going to work.” - Senator Barrak Obama on the Surge.

"I think it is very difficult for the President to sustain a war of this magnitude without the support of the American people, and without the support of the Congress of the United States. That's why Congress will vote to oppose the President's escalation." - Nancy Pelosi

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"In Iraq, his new plan is a plan for more door-to-door fighting, more civil war, more civilian casualties, more troop deaths, more wasted money, more destabilization in the region and more separation from the world community. The President wants to send more troops to Baghdad, where they will work to quell a civil war. Only a small portion - less than 20 percent - of the new effort will be spent in al Anbar, to fight al-Qaeda. Does anyone in this Administration have any sense left at all? They are sending more US troops into the middle of a civil war!

"Congress needs to take a stand against the President and take the necessary steps to bring our troops home. We need to begin talks with Iran and Syria -- and not blame them for our misguided war in Iraq. Diplomacy is the only way to avoid a widening war. If we follow the President's path of war, we will get . . . more war." - Dennis Kucinich

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"This country needs a dramatic change of course in Iraq and it is the responsibility of this Congress to consummate that change" - Congressman John Murtha

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"This escalation is the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Viet Nam." - Senator Chuck Hagel

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I believe ... that this war is lost, and this surge is not accomplishing anything..." - Harry Reid

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"it is too early to provide a definitive assessment of the US 'surge' but it does not look likely to succeed." - The House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, urging Prime Minister Brown to withdraw British troops

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I am not persuaded that 20,000 additional troops in Iraq is going to solve the sectarian violence there. In fact, I think it will do the reverse.” - Senator Barrak Obama in response to the PSOTUS

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"It's working. We're just years too late in our tactics. We can't be fighting the last war. We have to keep preparing to fight the new war. We have to win. I think the best way of honoring their service is bringing them home." - Senator Hillary Clinton to the VFW

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Bush Surge will backfire" - General (RET) Wesley Clark

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"This whole notion that the surge is working is fantasy." - Senator Joe Biden

The leaders of the loons sounding off. Do a little research on what the supreme leader of the loons said about the surge. He couldn't have been more wrong and now he will try to take the credit. It will backfire and his presidency will continue to freefall.

I love the fact that we have a reduced troop level in Iraq...make NO mistake about that...

    But...

along the lines of the OP...tonights 'victory' voted on by the government of Iraq. We legally HAD to leave.

The Iraqi Parliament passes the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) requiring all US forces to withdraw from Iraq no later than Dec. 31, 2011.

    Nov 2008

Our brave soldiers deserve our unyielding gratitude though. And I hope that is what tonight's address will truly be the bulk of....

These brave americans were brought into a GIGANTIC LIE. They looked ahead, and did their jobs. I respect each and every soldier who served to protect our constitution.

    THanks.

None of this would be necessary is George and his merry bunch of neo-cons did not lie to us...

Always find it interesting how the right wants to divert from the real issue.. that lying baztard George, tell your bs to the parents of the 4K parents, the 30K injured.. the families of the 100K women and children killed in Iraq( collateral damage) and the 1 trillion spent there..

So far, the main thing that the war on Iraq accomplished was to change the balance of power in the region so that Iran would not longer have to worry about Saddam and could devote its resources to building nuclear weapons and becoming an international power. The war failed American interests badly in that way. As far as Iraq itself goes, it remains to be seen if it will be significantly friendlier to our interests than was Saddaml; right now it's very weak and friendly to us because we provide it with so much aid, and we're not getting any more oil from it than we got prior to 9/11.

So what did all that money get us? A weak and dependent state (and hardly a reliable ally), a powerful Iran, hundreds of billion in debt. The surge certainly did fail.

I'll give credit were credit is do. George Bush LIED to get us into this war. The reason for going to war changed at least half a dozen times.Irans the big winner, the counter balance to iran is now gone, the area is more unstable. Bush, Cheney, Wolfawitz and the rest should be in prison.

Bush lied and many people Died for nothing, nothing was accomplished. Thanks W

Maybe a side "benefit" is that we now have a strategic place to be if Iran gets too far out of hand....and as fragile as it is there is at least some political process emerging for the different tribal factions to use to get along better.

That makes the loss of 4K soldiers and 30K wounded just about an even trade;););)

Really we have another base to supply, more money for the defense contractors.
