Re: Reiss ,Tedy break down of titans and bucs game
1) It is not the "wild horse" or "wildcat" itself that forces the vanilla D (paying attention to gap discipline) but the threat of it. Hindsight is 100% and we know now that McDaniels only intended to use it on the first drive, but during the game nobody knew if he was going to pull it again.. it was an excellent bluff.
2) BB always has had a wrinkle or two for every game against big opponents or for the playoffs, that is his specialty.
3) It is a misnomer to call the wildcat a gimmick- it's a modification of the power O which has been around a long time (e.g., Joe Gibbs/Redskins) and the only thing the Dolphins did to it was add the jet sweep and motion Ricky Williams weakside with Brown at QB.. that I guess is the gimmicky part of it, because you didn't know if Brown was going to hand off on end-around or go vertical on the pulling guard block and hit the gap he creates.
Given the above analysis, can someone experienced in the game tell me something: Miami wild-cat, Denver wild-horse...is a single type of unique O is all it takes for our D to go 'vanilla' and easy for the opposing O to take us apart?
Follow-up query: If that be the case, can't every O have something unique like that say during the playoffs to catch the opposing D off-guard?
Before someone responds that it is a one-trick pony, I want to point out that Miami is currently using the wild-cat quite powerfully and effectively (as we saw them in the Jets game). I am quite curious to see how they do against the Saints, who no doubt will be prepared for it but again, Miami had their bye-week and so might have some wrinkles to catch the Saints D off-guard. Should be interesting.
