You may remember that he was "extended" back in October on that day when he was released and then re-signed. It was widely reported that he had signed an extension through 2011, but in reality, like Alexander, he only signed a new one-year deal (Alexander later extended that one through 2010).

Miguel noticed when he was creating his 2010 cap pages this weekend that Banta-Cain is not in the NFLPA.org's active player database for 2010, which means he is officially not yet under contact for 2010. That makes him an unrestricted free agent.

Similarly, Mike Reiss mentioned the following yesterday:

TBC had a fine year. I hope he comes back- but not as the starting OLB. Too vulnerable to power runs to his side.

I agree, I think he would be perfect in a 3rd OLB, Rosie Colvin role. For that analogy to hold true, though, they'll need a Vrabel and McGinest starting. Thomas and Burgess obviously aren't those guys, so that's where the work needs to begin.

Also important is finding a Ted Johnson for our Roman Phifer (Guyton). He was obviously a liability against the run. At this point, they can't rely on McKenzie being that 3rd ILB. They'll need to go out and find a run-stuffing ILB to put next to Mayo on early downs. Or they can get thrashed by the Ravens again. Guyton fills a nice role as a late-down, nickel LB along with Mayo. They're all set there. It's just the late-down DE/OLBs and early-down ILB that they need.

He is not bad if you have a huge big play 3-4 END. With seymour he would have had even more success.Green at 290LB is a tweener 3-4end and then you put Banta who at 260 OLB who is again a tweener OLB .you got team running right at him.usually LT and LG are the bigger atheletic players. Now if your 3-4 end did his job of overwhelming the LG this forces the LT to chip
in which means on critical downs Banta will matchup against a RB or TE .Not Now.

If brace can play then playing banta as the OLB on his side will help as at 330 , 6 5 brace has the size be a big 3-4 end. He is not a NT as he is too tall for leverage based NT play.

He's a good player, but it says something that a castoff from another team is our best pass rusher.

Where is crable? where are all the guys they've developed along the way? Oh, there aren't any.

It makes me wonder how many of their own free agents the Patriots will

    re-sign. If they can't re-sign Banta-Cain, will they re-sign Leigh Bodden,

Ben Watson, or Vince Wilfork? I remember Bob Kraft saying that there

would be no long term contracts until the labor situation was resolved.

We need TBC back, he was the most consistent player on the D and at a time like this we need to keep the good players we have.

P.S. I think 70 active users viewing this thread shows how important he is to this team.

I'd say cut Green and give his money to TBC. He's more important as a backup than Green and we need to acquire a starter quality DE and OLB anyways.

    #75 Jersey

This was the contract that got reported and is still listed many places. I would really like to have him back he played well this year for us.

Agreed. He's fantastic on passing downs and getting to the quarterback (imagine the kind of year he would have had with a better DE taking up two blockers in front of him). However, he is still suspect against the run far too often to be an every down player. I love TBC and hope he's back next season, but I wouldn't mind adding another OLB that can set the edge as well as rush the passer.

I do recall hearing several weeks after the fact that no paperwork confirming that deal had yet been filed with the NFL. Perhaps there was some sort of option language in place in his new deal that would trigger a longer deal and it didn't pass muster. Or it was a player or team option that could be triggered or voided based on meeting certain minimum playing time or performance stats and having met or not met them one side decided to opt out.

I think you are right, Mo. Based on the reported deal, the $$ seem to be ok for a backup-LB. Now that TBC is a double-digit sack guy, maybe his agent urged him to option out of it and go back into FA.

Well, the same person who created this thread helps maintain that, so...

    But, Alexander was re-signed, officially.

You do? Then Thanks a lot; I love going to that page throughout the year, and have it bookmarked.

Labor of love. Besides maybe Ourlads.com, it's the most accurate out there. I'll try to finish the free agents soon.

I used to go to Ourlads, too, until they blocked the viewing of their depth chart pages unless you were a subscriber. And I'm just too poor & cheap to do that.

TBC's UFA status has added another item to the FO's already pretty full plate; but let's hope that Bill's signing & attempted restructuring/re-signing has created enough goodwill btwn. the 2 sides that TBC won't chase the last avail. penny from somewhere else. There doesn't seem to be much goodwill btwn. Bill & any of the other UFAs whom I would actually want him to re-sign.
