Like I always say, there are clowns on both sides.

AP Exclusive: Reid Got $1M in Land Sale

    WASHINGTON

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid collected a $1.1 million windfall on a Las Vegas land sale even though he hadn't personally owned the property for three years, property deeds show.
In the process, Reid did not disclose to Congress an earlier sale in which he transferred his land to a company created by a friend and took a financial stake in that company, according to records and interviews.

The Nevada Democrat's deal was engineered by Jay Brown, a longtime friend and former casino lawyer whose name surfaced in a major political bribery trial this summer and in other prior organized crime investigations. He's never been charged with wrongdoing _ except for a 1981 federal securities complaint that was settled out of court.

There are several scandals of this calibre floating around Congress right now. (See, for instance, http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/06/22/politics/main1740900.shtml)

What I don't get is that these people are wealthy enough to hire lawyers and accountants to manage their affairs, have staff to help them follow the rules, and they themselves helped create the rules they're supposed to follow. I don't know if Congress is more lax now than it was before, but it's certainly clear that if Congresspeople were removed for violating their own rules, there would be few Congresspeople left.

Dumbass, he should be investigated as should everyone else... every day I am becoming more and more anti incumbant, no matter what party they represent.

I think this stuff happened in the past. I just think that with today's advances, such as computers, electronic records, the internet, 24 hour cable news, cell phones, text messaging, etc...these clowns get caught.

I like how he hung up on the AP guy when he started asking GReid about it. Remember, their are crooks on both sides. I feel bad for the clean politicians.

They always break the rules. How many times have we read about someone who violated campaign finance laws? It's happened so often that I don't think we typically bother to post those stories even here. They're pompous and arrogant for the most part and can get away with it. They all belong to the same club, even if they're on opposite sides. I guarantee that, even with the Foley scandal haunting them, the Republicans won't make too much hay out of this violation.

The liberal DailyKos has a detailed response to this, and apparently this story is basically wrong:

    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/10/11/175829/67

It starts by quoting the original AP story:

"Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid collected a $1.1 million windfall on a Las Vegas land sale even though he hadn't personally owned the property for three years, property deeds show."

and then shows how the story was wrong:

"Actually, he did own that land. It just so happened that three years ago, he transfered the property from his own personal name to that of an LLC.

"It'd be kind of like me selling Daily Kos, and someone claiming I reaped a windfall from it because I "sold it three years ago". I didn't. Daily Kos became an LLC. As did Reid's piece of land.

"And btw, this was all disclosed to the ethics committee. The place were things got sloppy is that Reid continued to disclose ownership of the land as a personal asset rather than ownership in the LLC which owned the land. But that's it. Fact is, the LLC had no other assets other than this piece of land, and Reid disclosed ownership of the piece of land."

    There's more at the link.

The issue that Daily Dos so conviently ignores is that Reid never revealed his involvement in the LLC on his disclosure form as he is required to do. This allowed him to cover up ihis involvement in changing goverment right of ways for power lines over the property (freeing up 25% of the property for development, increasing it's value) and some enviromental restrictions.

Harry should resign as DeLay did. We know of course he won't. I wonder if Harry hid the money in Rep Jefferson's old freezer?

Now now, let's not jump to any conclusions... he's a Democrat so I am sure he did absolutely nothing wrong, because that's what the liberals on this board are always telling us in no-so-subtle ways.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to discuss cattle futures with Hillary Clinton...
