Re: Spikes returns to practice today

Brandon Spikes makes his first return to practice today since he sprained his MCL. Good to see that this teams is getting healthy as we head into the final month or so of the season.

It will be amazing if we turn into the Colts of 2006. They had the worse run defense in the league, they were giving about 180 yds per game before the playoffs just because one player was missing. He comes back in the playoff and nobody could run on them.
We are getting healthy at the right time, with our toughest games behind us.

Sweet Jesus, 180 ypc? Who the hell slipped an extra football field into the stadium? No wonder Brady always looks slow, we were judging him on a 100 yard field!

Lol, I remember that.

The 06 Colts lost to the Texans that season as Ron frickin' Dayne rushed for over 150 yards. Then Bob Sanders comes back and in the playoffs Larry Johnson gets like -5 yards rushing...Spikes is a very good run stopper so at the very least the run defense, which has been solid in recent weeks, should only get better.

Marcus Cannon, Sebastian Vollmer Absent From Patriots' Final Practice of Week - NESN.com

The Patriots were short on tackles during Friday's practice, as Sebastian Vollmer and Marcus Cannon were absent for the final session of the week.

Vollmer hasn't practiced in two weeks after suffering a foot injury against the Eagles, and he's also been dealing with a back ailment all season. Cannon has not appeared on an injury report since debuting at practice Oct. 25, so the reason for his absence was unknown.

Running back Stevan Ridley returned to practice after missing the first two sessions of the week to return home to take care of a family issue.

Linebacker Brandon Spikes also practiced for the second consecutive day for the first time since Week 9.

Vollmer won't play Sunday against the Redskins, which vaults rookie Nate Solder into the starting right tackle position for the seventh time this season. If Cannon can't play, the Patriots might need to activate Matt Kopa from the practice squad for positional insurance.

Two Patriots missing from Friday practice | Danny Picard | CSNNE.com

Running back Stevan Ridley returned to Patriots practice on Friday after missing the last two sessions because of a death in the family.

Missing from Friday's sweats and shells session was offensive linemen Sebastian Vollmer (back/foot) and Marcus Cannon. Vollmer has been battling injuries since August and has seen action in just six of New England's 12 games. Cannon's absence is new.

That's huge that Spikes and Fletcher practiced today.

It Is What It Is » Wes Welker wants everyone to know his wrist is ‘fine’

Did he suffer an injury recently that caused him to wear the extra protection?

“Wrist is fine,” Welker assured reporters on Friday. “I never wore a brace. I’m not sure where that’s coming from. Whatever [media] think, they think. I’m just out there trying to play some football.”

A soft cast?

“Not a soft cast, just a little lining,” said Welker, who leads the team in receptions with 93.

A sleeve?

“Yeah, I guess a sleeve.”

Welker and his right wrist will be ready and raring to go on Sunday when the Patriots play the Redskins, a team that has a good pass rush and the ninth-best pass defense in the NFL.

Thank you for the updates, jmt57. It's much appreciated.

Seems like good news all around, with the exception of Vollmer.

Hopefully, Cannon's not injury related...

Let's get healthy and manage these injuries wisely down the homestretch.

They have shown up at the walk-through's. Since this is 'sweats and shells' it's not clear if this means they are ready for real hitting.

Would be very nice to get one of those two back. Chung returning would be the bigger impact.

Marcus Cannon's Absence Not Injury Related, Brandon Spikes Among 12 Patriots Ruled Questionable for Sunday - NESN.com

Patriots rookie offensive lineman Marcus Cannon's absence from Friday's practice was not injury related, and he has been listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Redskins.

However, right tackle Sebastian Vollmer has been ruled out due to injuries to his foot and back, so rookie Nate Solder will make his seventh start of the season. Defensive end Jermaine Cunningham injured his hamstring during Friday's practice, and he has been listed as doubtful.

Well the Pats biggest problem has been pass defense, even though run defense hasn't been as stellar as it used to be in past years, and they simply do not have anyone returning that can transform pass defense.

Re: Spikes returns to practice today

I'm suprised nobody posted this yet..

Powwwwwwwwwwww

Per Reiss, it sure sounds like Markell Carter may be promoted to 53-man roster this week.

Re: Spikes returns to practice today

Meanwhile, Cunningham is doubtful for Sunday.

Reiss seems to think that maybe they'll shuffle Cunningham off to IR and call up Markell Carter.

Eyes on Cunningham & Carter - New England Patriots Blog - espnBoston

When second-year defensive end/linebacker Jermaine Cunningham showed up on Friday's injury report as doubtful (hamstring), it led to two thoughts:

1. What has happened to Cunningham this season?
2. Is defensive end/linebacker Markell Carter ready for a promotion from the practice squad to take his spot?

Aside from Cunningham becoming this year's number two fan favorite to hate on now that the 2011 edition of the Patriots no longer includes two players whose first names are Brandon, Markell Carter could rise from the ranks of obscurity to become everybody's favorite underdog.

Patriots Rookie Markell Carter Draws Inspiration From Sister Battling Lupus - NESN.com - Jeff Howe

"You want to become the best that you can," Carter said. "The whole football IQ part, that's a huge role. Football IQ is just as important as being able to rush the passer. You can have all of the ability in the world, but if you don't really understand the defense as a whole, you're going to lack a little bit. You might still be able to be effective and stuff like that knowing your role and your role only, but I feel like the more you know, you'll be better as a person. You'll be more confident in what you're doing. You'll be able to play fast. You'll be able to move around without even thinking. Knowing the whole defense is a huge, huge difference and a huge gain."

The 6-foot-4, 255-pounder has taken advantage of another opportunity, too. A sizeable portion of the reason why he's been relegated to the practice squad has to do with the players ahead of him on the depth chart. But Carter has made sure to use that to his advantage, even saying, "I think I fell upon the best situation as any defensive end drafted in the 2011 class."

Carter has soaked up information from veterans like Andre Carter, Mark Anderson, Shaun Ellis and Vince Wilfork, and Carter said Kyle Love has been a huge asset, too. That combination has been great for him because he can be a sponge while learning from a host of proven veterans, but Carter also has a group of younger players who know how to relate with him.

When thinking back, Carter said some of the best information he got was from Love, who told him before the preseason finale to leave everything he had on the field because it might have been his last chance to prove he deserved to be in the league, either on an active roster or a practice squad.

Carter took it to heart and followed through on Love's advice, and he finished with a preseason-best two tackles. Two days later, though, Carter was released with the message that he'd be back on the practice squad if no one else claimed him off waivers, which is how it turned out.

Back to Reiss and his commentary:

The sixth-round draft choice from Central Arkansas has been recognized in recent weeks by the coaching staff for his exemplary work in practice. He's bulked up from 252 to 268 pounds this year, his commitment in the weight room paying off as he makes the big transisition from the FCS-level to the NFL.

Another NFL team recently expressed interest in signing Carter, but Carter decided to remain in New England.

From my experience, that usually means that Carter can expect a significant pay raise and/or a promotion to the 53-man roster. With Cunningham showing up on the injury report Friday, it wouldn't be a surprise if Carter is promoted as soon as Saturday, with Cunningham landing on injured reserve.

the most interesting story line of this season has been Cunningham and Ellis' invisibility. I bet most observers would guess they'd be playing 50 snaps a game as starters before the season and yet they are both literally the only two guys dressing that aren't playing snaps on defense.
