Was this to grade the addition of Burgess or the trade itself...because as far as the trade goes we did give up a lot for a guy with one year left of his contract. But as far as the addition I had concerns about the depth at OLB and pass rush was an obvious need. I went with the average of these two thoughts as a the trade goes I would say an even 5 and as for the addition I would say 7 he is good but for one year. so 6 it is.

Its really a poll based on your opinion of Burgess as an NFL pro and the trade mixed in together and what you think totals what number from 1-10

It is of course a poll based on nothing from Derrick yet in a Patriots uniform but this is more of what you THINK will transpire during the season from him...an educated guess into the future poll you might say

For example If you think he puts up only 3.5 sacks and is out for a few games with injury then you give probably give him a 5 or less,If you think he will be a monster sack machine for us then you give him a 9 or 10 and if you think he will be decent to very good but not spectacular then 6-8 seems about right

So I rated this trade at 7. The price might be a little high but then again there's also no guarantees with a 3rd round pick (*cough crable cough*). Some factors that make this a good trade.

1. On his day, he's unstoppable.
2. Experience
3. (Probably) wants to prove a point/win
4. If our front 5 (Wilfork, Seymour, Warren, Thomas, Burgess) are healthy, the opposition offence won't have enough players to double-team us.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE OPENING GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

otto (eight)

I voted (8) by the time next year rolls around we will have probably traded and got the 3rd pick back. And reading what BB said about Burgess he sounds pretty positive about him But i wouldn't expect any thing different.

WEnt with an 8 also.. no big reason, except high expectations...

Can someone explain why they gave this trade a 3?

Derate the poll histogram by 2 slots to correct for homerism :) and you get a 6, above average value.

i went with 7;
meets an unfilled need, so that's a high score;
not too tough on the cap and the picks given are reasonable (nice if it can be a 5 instead of a 4), so another high score;
BB has a history of turning deals like this into gold on the field, so another high score, especially since he's probably willing to walk all the way from the Coast to get out of Oakland;
but, marked down for the uncertainty given injury and lack of playing time last year.

I give it an 8.......THOUSAND

Couldn't vote because that's not an option

In all seriousness I'll go 7. Still want to see what he has left and how much he can help us. Then again I really don't think giving up a 3rd and change to improve our weakest area is a whole lot unless he turns out completely useless.

Thats is pretty much where I went with my grade. I said I think of him as a 7 as far as a player at this point in his career and I figured the trade IMO was pretty fair to both parties so that I gave a 5 and split the difference and called it a 6....the one thing I may have left off my analysis was the need for depth and a pass rusher.

I gave it a 6. I know what Burgess does extremely well, and that's rush the passer. But his sack numbers, as was beaten into the ground several times in the official trade thread, have gone down steadily since 2006. Plus, he has never been in our style of defense before. However, his upside is interesting and he fills the left OLB hole that we had. The 6 that I gave him will stay for now. If he has a good year, it goes up to an 8 or a 9. If he has a great year (as in 10+ sacks), this looks like a 10 and the 3rd and 5th round picks we're giving up for him appears to be another theft of the Raiders courtesy of the New England front office.

If he collects 12 sacks, makes all-pro, and helps us win the SB, then this trade rates a 10.

If he continues his 3-year trend of sack #s declining by half of the previous year, and missing more games to injury, then this trade rates a 1 because of the exorbitant cost to acquire him.

I therefore split the difference and rated this trade a 5.

As he is a PROVEN all-pro caliber player in this leaue filling a HUGE deficiency we had in our defense.....I give the deal an 8. I also took into what other options were available....that made sense in terms of economics and production.....the only move...the best move as far as I'm concerned.

As a Raider fan you guys will not see much of me, but I wanted to congratulate you pats fans on picking up a good football guy in DB. I give the trade a 9 for you guys and a 6 for us.

Allot of the haters are going to come in here and say the guy has lost a step bla bla bla. Truth is you guys are going to get an extremely motivated, nasty football player, who at the end of his career badly wants a championship. I think he is going to do a great job in space going after a QB, he has always been pass rush specialist and I am confident your coaching staff will better use him to that end. DB is a liability against the run but not to the extent that he can not play a half or more of the time. His struggles also could have been due to the fact that my team continues to ignore the interior defensive line, but that is a post for another day on another forum.

Bottom line: Burgess is going to have another breakout year on a team with a sound defensive philosophy.

I refuse to go much away from the middle because, ahem,
I'M NOT BILL BELICHICK.

Check to see if caps lock is off.:D

Yes, it would be nice if we got him for a cheese sandwich. Yes, he might be a beast or a bust - my crystal ball shattered recently and I know only that I don't know.
