What is it with the Gostkowski ratings? The guy is in the top three for KO distance and, while he is tied for 12th in FG%, much of that is due to his low number of attempts. (eg. on missed kick is the difference between 12th and 4th since he has attempted the second least FGs in the league amongst full-time kickers). I thought he proved himself in last year's playoff when he made every attempt including a 50+ yarder and one with a minute left in a 3 point win over SD and a late one to take a 3 point lead against Indy.

There is no way he should be considered any less than 7/10, but I think it is closer to 8/10. And ranking Hanson and Gost equally?

I did a copy and paste from another post and forgot to edit the kickers. SG is a 7 or 8.

Eh, I'm not a huge Gost fan. I didn't give him credit for his kickoffs, I'd bump him to a 6-7 for that, but I've never felt secure with him in FG situations. In 2 seasons he's 13 of 17 from 30-39 yards and 4 of 8 from 40-49. Granted he hasn't had many opportunities, but while he's getting less than a chance a game from those distances most kickers are only at slightly over a chance a game, on average. Is he really that much rustier than the other kickers in the league? Anyway, scanning through the numbers, I couldn't find more than a handful of guys who had numbers that poor. I think it's reasonable to say, at this point in his career, that he's an average NFL kicker--slightly above average if you include kickoffs. Just my opinion.

I can see your reasoning but I have a rebuttal:

1) KO distance is the most consistent facet of a kickers game. FG% can vary wildly, but if you are excellent at KO's you will likely be so every year. Even if we agree that he is a little below average at FGs (which I don't but follow me on this one) you aren't weighing the KO enough.

Said another way, if you had a FG kicker that was top 3 in FG % but was below average at KOs, where would you rate him? Probably an 8 or a 9. KOs are just as important as FGs and with NE's offense, probably even more so.

2) You are counting all of Gost's kicks equally which I don't think is fair. He started out slowly last year only hitting 8/12 through 8 weeks, including 3/5 from 30-39 and 1-2 from 40-49. He is closer to average since this trial period than your numbers indicate, hitting 83% of 30-39 and still 50% on 40-49.

AV, btw, in 2001 hit 87% of 30-39 (7 for 8) and 58% on 40-49 (7 for 12).

I understand your pov, but we're going to have to agree to disagree. We're doing a ranking on this thread, and the premise, if I understood it correctly, was to rank a player from 1-10 (10 being an All Pro, 1 being a Miami backup). In my opinion, the fact that Gost is more important to the Patriots because they kick off much more than they kick field goals is, in my opinion, secondary to this discussion. The way I view it, make each player a free agent. Where would Gost be picked in an inaugural NFL draft among kickers? My guess is he'd be in the top 20, but not the top 10, which is where I ranked him (giving him a 6-7).

And I agree, he has gotten better...to start last year it looked like he wasn't going to be able to hack it, but since then he's been much improved. Still about average on longer field goals--and if I read the stats right his long is still just 45 yards--but other that (hitting the one's he should be hitting, kickoffs, etc) he's been above average. I think considering his age and powerful leg things are only going to get better with him and when all is said and done he could be a top kicker in the league, so please don't think I'm bashing him.

If it came down to a FG in the playoffs would you be nervous? Especially if it were in the 35-45 yard range where Adam was money everytime. I know I'm hoping that these playoff games dont come down to a FG.

How can you say that?? What has Gots done to prove that he can make it? He hasnt had to make any big kicks at all this season, or really in his career for that matter. He is a great kickoff guy but when it comes down to FGs hes just average.
