Best of luck to Randy in his post-career endeavors!

I can safely say that he was player that I never even remotely considered buying one of the Pats Jerseys with his name on the back.

So much for "Randy Gay" jokes indeed.

I just hope he can have a normal life.

Sounds like he's dealing well with it and had the good sense to walk away. Hope he saw a good chunk of that $17M deal with NO, and banked it. It's the fringe guys I worry about. The elite guys make a ton of money for their sacrifices, albeit too often squandered, but the fringe players in this game absorb a ton of abuse often in a compressed time frame for comparative peanuts. ABrandt tweeted this AM that Kevin Garnett has made $288M in his NBA career... That's almost twice what an only an elite QB could hope to make in an NFL career. I'd still prefer to see the floor raised for NFL at the expense of the ceiling when it comes to base salary structure in this league so that guys who claw their way onto rosters, often from PS and by playing ST and absent big chunks of bonus money, reap a more realistic share of the potential rewards.

I've got one, and it is a hoot to wear out in public. Starts all kinds of conversations, and leads to a lot of laughs. Pats fans generally love it, and my gay friends (for once) don't know what to say.

He'll most be remembered for his role in the superbowl:

Solid and sensible move! Hopefully he can make a life for himself outside of the NFL. Guy has had a successful pro and college career..he's achieved pretty much everything he could have wanted. When you have a family it brings things into perspective too.

I checked and he received a $3.75 signing bonus and $6.9 was guaranteed of a four year deal in Spring 2008. In addition, it looks like the Saints did the right thing and didn't release him until July 2011 even though he went on IR in October 2010. So, he got three of the four years and if my math is right should have pocketed $14 mil or so. Whether he "banked it," that's anybody's guess.

Best wishes to Randall Gay for a healthy retirement. I hope he was smart in how he handled the $14million or so that the Saints paid him.

I didn't realize until I checked, but not only does he have the two rings from 04 and 09, but he led the entire Patriots Defense with a beast-like 10 tackles against the Eagles in SB XXXIX.

If you compare his rookie year (2004) stats with Asante Samuel's that year:

Games Started: Samuel 13, Gay 9
    INT's: Samuel 0, Gay 2
    Tackles: Samuel 37 (+ 2 Assists), Gay 29 (+ 5 Assists)
Fumbles Recovered: Samuel 0, Gay 2.

The guy played with heart and used every last bit of his talent but of those 10 tackles against the Eagles I'd wager 8 of them were on Owens from behind after he had gained more than ten yards.

    Best wishes in retirement Randall.

Owens had the kind of day that would have gotten him talked about for SB MVP if the game had gone the other way, so I guess the glass is either half-empty or half-full...yes, indeed, he gained a lot of yards, but he also didn't get into the End Zone. :singing:

I'd rather the NFL force owners to help other owners create more revenue. It is one thing to say these 3 or 4 NFL owners are the class of the lot, another to let everyone else just rot.

They need to get a team of people together to force every NFL owner to maximize earning potential.

Of course, I also think ticket prices have to go down, and prices for food and drinks inside stadiums are totally stupid.

However I would not mind a maximum contract increase per year. Say that no new contract can ever be more than a few percent over the previous highest contract ever. I'd go with 5% at the absolute most. That would at least serve to slow down the insane pay increases. Or better yet, highest contracts by position.

Owens had the kind of day he had in the Super Bowl because the refs DID NOT call the illegal pick plays Philly was running all game. I get all the "heroic wounded warrior plays the game of his life" angles the media hyped afterwards but just take out your DVD (if you don't have one I question what you're even doing on a Patriot fan board)...play it back and slo-mo it on the Owens catches and LOOK at the illegal picks...it was unbelievable.
