Raining Snowballs

The refs would penalize the pats because the fans threw snowballs? It is 100 percent impossible to stop a massive crowd from hurling snow balls when it is all over the stadium.

Few idiots are always going to be idiots. That sid Im glad Mangini got hit with a snowball.

No its not, charge the off/def an unsportsman like 15yrd penalty a few times on a critical drive, they'll stop, or the true fans would eventually rise up and beat the losers and throw them on the field..... I think of philly or oakland when i see **** like that, i amazed at the stupidity, i mean come on, ice balls from the upper section, you could easily kill someone...... I hope they hire a team of film editors to scan the stadium film ( Yes the stands are filmed, each section, for this purpose ) and bounce any of those turd hammers out of their season tickets or whomever season tickets they are..............:enranged:

Honestly throwing snow up in the air is a lot of fun and it is harmless. It is now a New England Tradition. But I could not believe the amount of snowballs thrown on the field and in the stands. I would say there were literally hundred of snowballs thrown today that hit the field. I swear as Mangini walked off the field somone threaded the needle and snuck a snowball through the wall of security people surrounding the colossal DB and it hit him on the head. Yeah it is kind of funny that Mangini got hit but I felt bad for the cops and security guards who got pelted with hundreds of snowballs all day. I mean it was completely redicoulous and surprising that this could happen in Gillette. I guess the wine and cheese crowd doesn't fully own the Razor yet. Anyways any thoughts?

I don't understand the mentality. One has the golden opportunity to view a great team playing right in front of your eyes but chooses to regress into a nonthinking crowd mentality frenzy. This type of idiocy is what led to folks getting crushed to death at other sports and music venues. Moronic! I'd rather beat Mangini the way the team did...

Since I haver never been to Pats game, I guess I'll never understand the mentality of the crowd. I was actually very happy and delighted to see people throwing snow in the air to cheer. However, when CBS showed ice thrown on field, I was just appalled at site of it. Its one thing to hate Jets as a sports team but that sort of thing can seriously hurt someone and possibly jeopardize ones career. I understand this is football, rough and tough sports but we do not need to resort to this kind of foolishness that endangers other people. Only thing that stoppage helped to do was kill momentum Pats were building up to that point and miss out on touchdown.

However, I did hear people chant 'R-A-T-S RATS RATS RATS' while watching the game and that made me smile....

All quotes from NFL.com.

Not true. "The referee must not assess an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty on the home team for actions of fans that cause or contribute to an emergency."

No one has the authority to do that. Literally, even the commissioner cannot unilaterally declare a forfeit. A forfeit can only happen when "a game is not played because of the failure or refusal of one team to participate."

Moreover, a game can only be terminated if "its resumption (a) would not change its ultimate result or (b) would not adversely affect any other interteam competitive issue." And, more importantly, the refs cannot end a game prematurely without permission from a league representative or the Commissioner, though they may suspend the game temporarily for safety reasons.

I understand the quotes your giving, but I don't think that covers the entire situation. I'm pretty sure that if the officials have to stop the game, and the fans continue with the same behavior, then the officials can penalize the home team. The thinking is that fans will stop if their actions effect their teams chances of winning.

I know this type of penalty has existed, but maybe the NFL took it off the books...

i dont see the big deal...i was at the game and thought it was hilarious...Mangini is a rat and he can handle a couple snowballs, they explode when they hit you...it doesnt hurt. If the worst thing security has to deal with is a few snowballs then so be it...it really wasn't that bad or pathetic, just fans trying to have fun...i know it sounds cruel.....blown out of proportion IMO .....im def glad mangini got hit

You sound like a real stand up guy.

Thoughts? It's f**king pathetic!

The fans are lucky they didn't cost the Patriots an unsportsmanlike penalty, especially after at least one official got hit by an iceball.

I agree with you sebman! Really, really PATHETIC!

I watched as young boys around 10-13 years old stood & threw snowballs while sitting right beside their fathers. I tried to rat out as many as I could but it appeared Gillette was short on security yesterday. I'd guess I reported around 10 individuals to security and they didn't throw out any of them.

It was an embaressing day for Patriots fans.

Mangini didn't deserve to be hit by any snowballs thrown by LOSERS. I saw one guy down below me turn & look up only to be hit in the face by a water logged snowball. Had I seen the guy who threw it, I would have been proud to been the one to report him and have him thrown out.

It was "really that bad & pathetic"...YOU should have been the one to be hit in the face by one of those snowballs that didn't really hurt son. You really have no idea what being a Good Patriots fan is all about. You don't deserve to attend our games.

I got a better kick out of it the first time around.

hmmm, the sad part is, that if mangini did get seriously hurt from one of these ice balls, there's alot of posters on here that would be happy....thats whats pathetic. gillette security will review video, and will piss off some season ticket holders.....on the good side of things,,,,atleast it aint like the old sullivan stadium days. snow wasnt the only thing that might hit you:D

Immature as hell to be pelting visiting teams with wet, icy snowballs. Totally dumb. Spoils the atmosphere, dragging it down to a mass of out-of-control children. Spoiled rotten. You'd expect this kind of thing in New York, but thank God New England is not the same. Gillette security needs to post warnings and make announcements that if that should ever happen again, the perpetrators will be escorted out of the stadium, immediately.

Was a black mark in NE and the Pats.

Jets fans and their "show us your ....." crew call Patriots fans classless, and vice versa. I would think that people would figure out that most fan bases are a mixed group by now, but I guess not. I'm sure that different regions have different percentages, but there are no fan bases without 'sin'.

Agreed....I think they do not post warnings beacuse it's not something that happens in every game..and I THINK MOST undesrtand it's the mentality of a single digit aged person...TOTALLY embarrassing..and one can see the posters who applaud it here where they are..and THAT just speaks volumes for what they are.. As one said teh cams will pick up whose seats they were and..I hope those season ticket holders will be gone..

To the poster who said they only showed one on TV - they zoomed in on one (clearly an ice chunk), but even in the very next widescreen shot you could see the endzone littered with them.

A few weeks back on one of the infamous Colts's crowd noise threads there was a reference to teams being penalized for the crowd being too loud. I've never seen that myself, but if that was true I can't imagine why they couldn't penalize a team for actions like we saw yesterday.

I hope security is able to single out the worst offenders and take back their tickets.

I was in the south EZ yesterday...security yoked up a whole bunch of clowns caught on the video cameras throwing ice balls...it takes them time but they're pretty good at it.

See, I don't see what the big deal is. First people are complaining that the fans sit on their hands the whole game...Now people are complaining that the fans are too rowdy.

Make up your mind!

I'm half-kidding.

The Gillette crowd has (correctly) been bashed for not cheering. Now they do something original and have a bit of fun and it becomes a big deal because they stepped over the line.

Does anyone remember the metal bleacher days?! Thrown snowballs were the least of your worries.

Original?? throwing ice balls is original? pretty lame if you ask me...being a loud and cheering fan does NOT have anything to do with throwing snow or ice..THAT shows no brains and hardly a real fan...you can join danny in the toddlers room...

I used to work at this popular nightclub in Prov. called "Engine Company" back in the early 80's...anyway, we always had a staff and friends bus ride and ticket package to a game or two every year. One year went up there with garbage cans filled with ice cold brews and bottles of Irish Mist. 42 guys made the trip up...six made the trip back. That's right...36 guys got arrested for various misdemeanors. This one bartender, Big Eddie, ran out on the field at the 50 yard line late in the 4th quarter and pulled his drawers down.He got muckled by a gang of staties and security....didn't remember a thing the next day when we went up to bail him out. That cost him 5 bills. Today you'd get prison time for a stunt like that.
