    I used to read _The Nation_ regularly back when I tried hard to hear all sides. Like twenty years ago.

    But the latest weirdness is an article by David Zirin in which he says conservatives' dislike of soccer is really an expression of "racism and imperial arrogance." No joke. And I thought it was all those tie scores.

    As a fan of the late great Duffy Dougherty who said a tie is like kissing one's sister, I had thought it was because of that that I didn't like soccer. And all that blow horns used in the stadium. I never knew it was because of my cultural imperialism or racism. (DD said that after the memorable 1966 tie game with Notre Dame.)

    Well that makes sense, because many conservative folks are huge football fans, and we all know that it's all white people in that sport. [/sarcasm}

    What do you expect? Some people are so focused on and obsessed with race that it's all they see. And they're usually the ones accusing everyone else of being racist. It's a pretty sad trait that helps to keep race relations in the relatively fragile state they are in.

    As for why we don't like soccer in this country, who knows. I do find it odd that virtually every kid plays it (because it's cheap and safe to play), but only a small percentage of them grow up loving it. I've heard it's because we can't commercialize it, which is an interesting theory, but who really knows.

    Why We Don't Like Soccer:
    Could it be that when we hear the word "Soccer" we see images in our heads of thousands of fans trying to kill each other with chairs and bottles........:confused:

    Have no clue if it is racist or not, but it bores the hell out of me... not able to watch much of it.

    You racist pig! :D

    I love soccer. Matter of fact, I'm playing tonight. I agree with the general sentiment that it can be a boring sport. Having captained my team in high school, and a European upbringing, I guess my affection for the sport is different than the average American. Still though, stuff like the Champions League, Euro Cup, and especially the World Cup, are sensational events to watch, as they showcase the best players the world has to offer.

    And blowing horns:D Everyone played in school, we had a blast at the tourneys too, we even won the State Championship twice:singing: I like watching the game but I agree about some of the fans. They should put some of that energy into some actual physical movement of their own rather than being just a bunch of angry voyeurs. Weird.

    BTW...

    YouTube - Beautiful Game Turned Ugly: Racism in Europe's Soccer Arenas

    I remember seeing a report on that HBO sports program a number of years ago about European racism toward black soccer players, and I was absolutely stunned by it. They showed a clip of a black player in a Euro game attempting to take a corner kick, with hundreds of banana's being thrown at him from the stands. The grass was litterally covered in banana's. I was absolutely stunned. I couldn't believe people did that in the 21st century, or were even permitted to in a stadium. I think people would beat the pee out of fans who tried the same in this country. Lord knows I would.

    This is exactly why when people preach to me how much more violent and racist Americans are I tell them to watch a soccer match. I saw that video a few years ago and was horrified...
