Senator Ted Stevens.......regardless of what he did or did not do what an ironic and horrible way to die.

He was one of only two survivors of a 1978 plane crash in Anchorage which killed his first wife.

Ex-NASA chief Sean O'Keefe was also on the flight with Senator Stevens - his fate remains unknown.

    Tragic but there were survivors

Former Sen. Ted Stevens dies in plane crash - U.S. news - Life - msnbc.com

Nine people were on board, including Stevens and former NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe and his son Kevin, officials said. Sources close to the family told NBC News that Sean O’Keefe suffered a broken pelvis and other bones and was expected to survive, as was his son.

Survived one crash only to die in another...you get lucky once but you can't cheat death. Sucks for his family and the families of the people onboard hopefully all of the survivors make a full recovery.

He wasn't exactly the driving force as that had been in the works long before he got to the state or to DC, that was others in the soon to be former territory itself who did the driving...He handled the legal work and did the lobbying for statehood, both legally and illegally(worked for executive branch at the time).

Of interest to anyone about the whole statehood situation...

    http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we...=_rank_:D&xcal_ranksort=4&xcal_useweights=yes

It has to be noted that in working for statehood he was going against his party's needs in Washington by essentially giving 2 Democrats seats in the Senate and 1 Democrat a seat in the House of Representatives. This action was killing prior chances for statehood...and could have backfired if he stayed in DC afterward.

this has been breaking news all over the place for the day or so...i want to know why we never see more coverage of American Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines as they come home in flag draped coffins? I guess it is not important enough to people

Let's not forget to R.I.P the other 4 people that died too. You know, the ones that didn't bilk the American taxpayers for BILLIONS of dollars.

We didn't see news about them every day when he was President, but good job trying to make everything about Obama.

Boston Boxer, the sad truth is that people become immune to it to an extent, and thus the media don't find it newsworthy.

Many people are far more interested in the latest celebrity gossip, for any number of reasons, I suppose.

And I'm sure the government wants it that way. How often do we hear about the public losing its "will" due to seeing the toll war takes? Why was the press banned from Dover? (No idea if the latter has continued.) Maybe there's some validity to that opinion, too, but if there is, it's a pretty sad reflection on our country -- either on a public that can't deal with the reality that war will result in lives lost, or on a government that's involving us in wars that aren't worthy of support.
