Quiet day so let's look at our 2008 #1 draft choice - SF style!!

Looking at SF schedule, I really do not see them winning many more than FIVE, possiby SEVEN games. I do not feel they are that good and while yes, they showed something last year - I think they take a step back in 2007 only to finally make the playoffs in 2008.

So, if they win only five games, that means we are looking at a top 10 pick!!!

I can see them losing at least 3, maybe 4, possibly all of the first five games. If they start of as bad as I think they will, they could spin out of control and set the stage for a top five pick for New England!! With three of the middle five games on the road, again, I only see 2 wins, maybe three if things are going well. Closing out their season, I see their last five games to be their best chance of taking three out of the five. So, I really think, being generous, they win at most 7 games which will equal top 15 pick for us - not bad at all!!!

Most people are playing the politically correct "they're gonna be good" game. Bull.

    Here's mine :

    September 10# vs. Arizona Win
September 16 @ St. Louis Loss
    September 23 @ Pittsburgh Loss
    September 30 vs. Seattle Loss
    October 7 vs. Baltimore Loss
    October 14 BYE
October 21 @ NY Giants Loss
October 28 vs. New Orleans Loss
    November 4 @ Atlanta Loss
November 12#* @ Seattle Loss (Mon night)
    November 18*vs. St. Louis Loss
    November 25*@ Arizona Loss
    December 2* @ Carolina Loss
    December 9* vs. Minnesota Win
    December 15* vs. Cincinnati Loss
December 23* vs. Tampa Bay Win
    December 30* @ Cleveland Win

LOL, I only gave them four wins. I tried to talk myself into them beating Atlanta or NYG but they're both on the road so I couldn't. Minnesota was a tossup but in SF I gave them that one. I imagine they'll win a few that I gave them losses for but I'm just not buying SF. 5th worst point differential in the league last year. Worst scoring defense - I know they've added guys but they have a long way to go and I expect Smith to regress some without Turner. I will be stunned if they crack 8 wins.

Based on your predictions, what do think the Pats will do in the 08 draft? Assuming it's a high pick, do we stay put or trade down?

I see them going either 7-9 or 8-8. This would brobably give us a pick between 18-24.

I hope you guys are right, but I really think you're approaching this argument with red-white-and-blue-colored glasses. SF is an up and coming team. It's not a matter of being politically correct. It's being realistic.

Of course it's impossible to know right now but if we pick in the 10-12 range unless there's a STUD at a need position I would expect us to trade to trade for a 2009 #1. Get a low #1 or a #2 and a 2009 #1 - it's what we seem to like to do and it just keeping the merry go round spinning :)

The good thing about the 2008 draft is, based on preseason, it looks like there's 4 or so first round QBs - which not only pushes others down but QB always fetch the most in trade downs.

There's really nothing to suggest that. Yeah their record was OK last year but they were bad. B A D bad. Point differential, baby, it tells the story. Good pickup in Winfield, Vernon Davis could emerge. Other than that you're looking at rookies and an overated Darrel Jackson (who will be hard pressed to outdo the departed Antonio Bryant's 733 yards and 3 TD IMO) and journeymen like TBC and Lelie.

IMO the 49ers aren't up and coming, they're overated based on a bloated record last year. If Staley and Willis come through they may be up and coming in a couple of years but those two won't set the world on fire this year IMO. I also like their division as improving.

They're gonna lose all of them IMO. Seattle and St. Louis are clearly better than SF.

Re: Quiet day so let's look at our 2008 #1 draft choice - SF style!!

Couldn't disagree more. Alex Smith is only going to get better, especially with DJack and (of course, less so,) Lelie to throw to. It's far from a two-man show, too, with Frank Gore cementing his spot among the lead's elite runners (he can catch, he can run fast, he can run w/power... a "complete back." If Maroney became Gore-esque this year, we would be on here 24/7 drooling about what a great pick he turned out to be.) Adding what's left of TBC will probably be a positive, if not a great addition, and adding Nate Clements should be a game-changing decision at least once or twice this year. They finished 7-9 last year, and I don't think they're weaker at any spot this year, except tight end (where Eric Johnson, at times, had excelled.) Even so, Johnson was injured all last year and they still made 7-9.

You might even be looking at an NFC playoff team here. I definitely don't see the team going backward, and think 10 wins is in the "main sequence" of possibilities. My money would be on 8-9 wins for the 9ers:

    Split w/Arizona = 1
    At least 1W vs. St.Louis = 1-2
    L at Pittsb.
    Split w/Seattle = 1
    L vs Balt.
    W vs. Giants = 1
    L vs. NO
    W at Atlanta = 1
    L at Carolina
    W vs Minn = 1
    L vs Cinn
    W vs TB = 1
    W at Cle = 1

Of course, we get to see which "doormats" are actually powers, and which "powers" were big fakeouts, once they play the games. They'll win some they should lose and vice versa (for that reason, I see arguments based on schedule as pretty much meaningless). But ranking them by who they are and what they've gained/lost to the outsider's eye, this is how I see the 9ers sorting out this year.

That puts our draft pick somewhere in the 13th to 20th range. Still not bad, an additional middle-first pick. If you really have your eye on someone, you can package the high end of that range (13) with our own first rounder, and crack the top 10... But that doesn't seem to be the Pats' style.

But I wouldn't bet the farm on the 9ers going backward 2 games after adding what they've added. Wishing hard enough won't make it so.

    Just my .02,

By the way, I just typed "that's just not the Pats style," which, after this offseason, should be taken with a containership full of salt. So yeah, if nobody expects us to package 2 picks and move way up, well obviously, that's what we'll do.

maybe some guys will get injured and that'll help our team out.

Last year i would try and post updates of the games that Seattle was going to lose and every time they would come back and win by a Josh Brown 56 yard field goal with no time remaining.

It happened about 5 or 6 times.

I'll probably still do updates, but just as long as everyone knows that usually they aren't very helpful.

Hope you're right, BelichickFan. I didn't see the SF team that you clearly saw last year. Steady improvement, some nice wins, and why do people think so much of St. Louis?

There is no way San Fran is going 5-11 next year. Not in your wildest dreams. I'm saying 9-7... maybe 10-6 in a very weak NFC.

The 49ers have been awful since 2002. Alex Smith is one of the worst starting QB's in the league. St. Louis is the real up and coming team, while Arizona has a better coaching staff in place. Seattle are still favorites to win the division. That's the real picture here.

Because they were a tiebreaker away from making the playoffs last season. Steven Jackson, Marc Bulger, solid o-line, solid WR's, Randy McMichael at TE... they have a great offense. The 49ers, meanwhile, have grossly overpayed for one CB and suddenly they are the trendy pick.

Have you watched Alex Smith play at all the last couple of years? For a guy thrown into the spotlight way too fast and on a ****ty team (ala Joey Harrington), Smith has really developed. I watched some of him last year and was suprised at the differences. This team will improve... don't kid yourselves. But then again, if it makes you sleep better at night telling yourselves that the 49ers won't be any better (so it wouldn't have been a blown draft pick this year at least) then keep on keeping on. The reality is that we wasted a perfectly good draft pick this year which will be practically in the same place next year.

I like them a lot more than SF. Much better QB, much better WR, also a top RB, solid addition at TE of McMichael. Their defense is questionable but so is SF.

Well, Smith had better numbers in the first half than the second half (of the season, not individual games) last year so I don't see why he'll automatically get better. He lost his coordinator who is a top QB coach. Darrell Jackson ? Overated ball dropper. Lelie ? Yeah right.

The only really good win was the last week against Denver.

Other than that, 2 wins against Seattle who was messed up with Alexander and Hasselbeck in and out all year. Detroit. Oakland. LOL. Minnesota. And a decent win Week 2 against St. Louis.

The NFC may not be the AFC but I think it's getting better, I like the NFC West to be better and other than Cleveland, SF has a tough AFC division in the AFCN.
