I was watching the replay last night on NFLN. There were 7 seconds left when Vinatieri kicked the ball and after he makes it, the place explodes, Pats run onto the field, etc. My question is: when, exactly, does play end on a field goal attempt? I've always assumed it's supposed to end when refs confirm good or bad and blow the whistle. I believe this has been questioned before, but I wonder if there might've been a second or two left on the clock after that kick was made. If so, the Patriots would've been required to kick off giving the Rams a final chance to handle the ball. Did the league ever address this? Or, was the full 7 seconds really used on that play?
