Re: QB Patrick Ramsay deciding between NE and Ten

If having a hot wife meant you were a good QB, then I'd be starting for some team in the NFL!

You must be rich then, old man. ;)

If Ramsey signs with the Pats it will be because he's the veteran back-up that BB likes to have. Like Huard was. Like Testaverde. Like Flutie.

Ramsey and O'Connell would battle it out for the number 2. O'Connell hasn't earned the spot. It was handed to him by default when Brady went down last year. And, the Pats didn't add anyone because they figured if Cassel went down, their hopes were done anyways.

Gutierrez was cut last year because Cassel outplayed him and O'Connell was a 3rd round pick. And BB hasn't cut anyone above a 5th rounder during their 1st training camp. Gutierrez was re-signed because he knew the system.

Wasn't Cassel a default #2 for at least one of his seasons with the Pats? Drafted QBs have more reward potential while vets like Huard and Ramsey will have their cup of coffee and a donut and leave.

Huard was never a veteran backup here. He was an UDFA who caught on with Miami after Cincy cut him and as impressed as Pats fans were with him Miami cut him in 2000 which is how we picked him up in 2001 where he was the 3rd QB except during the weeks Bledsoe was unavailable... He was #2 here in 2002 and 2003 by default as you call it because Bill made a mistake in the 4th based on Saban's advice and drafted a QB who couldn't play in this league if his life depended on it... He wanted too much $$ to be a backup so they let him walk in 2004. That's the truth on Damon as opposed to urban legend...

Bill considers a veteran backup a player with 8 years in the league and some modicom of success. He talked about that when he brought Flutie in. Bledsoe was that here in 2001. We didn't have one again until 2004 when they signed Miller even though he was injured in hopes of avoiding using Rohan... So so much for precedent. Luckily Tommy remained healthy. Then in 2005 they signed Flutie and drafted Cassel and Rohan was finally history. In 2006 they had Vinnie in for camp but went without a #3 at all until mid season when they added him to the roster as that. In 2007 they signed Gutierrez as an UDFA and skipped adding a veteran backup once again because Brady now had his 8 years in. 2008 when Brady went down they went with 3 guys didn't have 8 years between them because they had Brady available on IR to veteran mentor as needed. Brady is the veteran presence here now.

Huard was recently cut again, by Scott Pioli no less. You'd think he'd have had value to Scott all things considered, but reality is I think they never saw Damon as more than a great scout QB (and better than Rohan Davey which isn't saying much...).

Ramsey also doesn't qualify as a veteran presence by BB criteria. If he ever does get a contract here it will be to fight Gutz for a roster spot and as worst case desperation scenario insurance in the event KOC and Gutz both turn out to be crashing disappointments.
