Crap, that means Brady has had a setback :D

Actually, it does suggest we may go the vet backup route over a draft pick.

I don't think so. He's 6-2, 225 pounds. Maybe if he put on about 15 pounds of upper body strength he could move to the inside linebacker position. :singing:

No. It merely means Kevin O'Connel is NOT ready to be the primary backup...:(

I was a getting ready to post a new thread, asking who among the veteran QBs that the Pats might sign as the vet backup to Brady.

I think they are just kicking tires. Someone to battle Gutierrez in camp, maybe? He's nothing to get excited about, IMO.

Re: QB Patrick Ramsey visited today

No, just like they were never contemplating keeping Cassel on the roster at $14.6M...it just means they are doing due diligence as always and they may want/need an extra arm for spring passing camps and TC to boot. I wouldn't call Ramsey a veteran QB, more like a 1st round bust who hung on as a JAG backup. If they sign him at all he'll compete with Gutierrez for the inactive slot... If he passed O'Connell on the depth chart they might as well cut Kevin.

He really wasn't horrible in Washington. Got thrown to the wolves a early and was ruined by Spurrier (sacked a lot), and then was replaced by Brunell as he was Gibbs's guy the second he got even a minor injury (second game). If you think David Carr was mismanaged, Patrick Ramsey is like the classic case. He has plenty of talent and has turned into a journeyman. You could do worse for a backup.

Cassel didn't earn the primary backup role until his third year. Before that, the Patriots had Flutie in 2005, and Testaverde in 2006. It wouldn't be abnormal for O'Connell to be the third quarterback this year, though I honestly suspect that he'll be the #2.

Now we're on to something. I wonder if N.O. would trade him.

Re: QB Patrick Ramsey visited today

Cassel was the #3 in his rookie season beating out the immortal 3rd year #2 Rohan Davey in camp and pre season. Cassel was the #2 after Flutie left in his second year. Doug endorsed him on his way out the door knowing had he not left the kid had passed him on the depth chart. Vinnie from the couch didn't sign on until mid season when BB felt he had roster space for a #3 to be a veteran sounding board for Brady and emergency QB down the stretch. That's all Vinnie ever was.

As for Ramsey, since leaving Washington he hasn't rebounded. He is 30 years old and entering his 8th season, but he's only thrown 52 passes in the last 3 with 1TD, 1INT, 2 Fumbles and 4 Sacks to show for it. In his lone appearance last season we sacked him, caused him to fumble and injured his elbow and he went on IR...

And while Carr didn't have a very good OL, I'm not so sure there was a better way to manage him, or Harrington or Ramsey. Most of the time I think guys are what or who they appear to be. I believed I knew what Cassel was after that week 17 Miami game. I guy who could start in the NFL. The occasional snap or pre season look thereafter didn't alter my thinking. Turns out he was what I thought he was.

If Bill decides to sign Ramsey maybe there's hope for him and I guess Gutz is again on the bubble. If O'Connell takes a step back and either of them overtakes him as the #2, then he's looking at becoming a bubble player himself. He's had a full camp and regular season as the #2 on a well coached team. That's more than Brady or Cassel had heading into their second season and Bill knew they could handle the job.

Ramsey is at least at good as Gut. It can't hurt to have him as our #3. Perhaps he will push O'Connell this year, perhaps not.

And, yes we could use a 3rd and 4th arm for the various camps. I wouldn't expect to see Brady until beginning of the preseason, and perhaps not even then.

I've kept an eye on Scott Young since he benched 43 reps at the combine in 2005, and he's got prototypical size for Pats guard at 6.4, 312 lbs.
Wikipedia says he is the son of a police officer and an elementary school teacher. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer Young is an Eagle Scout with 64 merit badges. Something for Dante?

Ramsey might be able to do the job, and will not cost a lot of money.. if not no big investment.. smarter than average guy, who may be an asset.

Actually liked him when he played against us, good arm and guts. That offense was screwed up, but they managed to beat us.

Having said that, I'm fine with the backups from last year.
