Top 10 candidates to swap teams at the trade deadline - NFL.com

The 10 candidates are (in no particular order that I can tell):

    TE Fred Davis
    WR Josh Gordon
    WR Hakeem Nicks
    RB Maurice Jones-Drew
    WR Kenny Britt
    DE Jason Babin
    S Jairus Byrd
    RB Mark Ingram
    WR Greg Little
    DE Jared Allen

And so, obviously, the two players that are seen as possible fits for the Patriots are . . . Babin and Allen.

    And then ESPN proposes . . .

NFL trade proposal - Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew to the New England Patriots - ESPN

I would think that at the most, we'd be in the market for a cheaper signing like a Fred Davis kind of player. TE could be an option, although probably not. We just made a move with signing Ninkovich to an extension, and brought in Carter. How many DE's do we need? RB seems to be fine, unless someone like MJD would restructure his 4.5 million dollar deal. Even then, I think we're just fine at RB too. Safety with Byrd? We already have our work cut out with McCourty and Talib who both need big, long term pacts. How could we afford another high priced safety?

I'm not buying into the whole "WR" hype. We already are asking Brady to do way too much as it is in terms of babysitting these players (Thompkins, Collie, Dobson, Boyce/Sudfeld at one point). What sense would it make to ask him to babysit yet another WR who has no knowledge whatsoever of our offense here?

A very smart player like Collie is already putting in 3 hrs a day extra before/after practice with Brady, Belichick, O'Shea, and McDaniels; and he admitted that there are a ton of similarities between his last system and ours aside from the verbiage. I have a very difficult time imagining another WR who likely isn't even as smart or the limited knowledge of Collie, coming in here and suddenly picking things up 1/2 way into the season.

Who else is left? I'm not seeing many options here that are reasonable.

    Hmm..

I mean why not just make it a blockbuster:

    Jaguars receive

    Blount
    Bequette
    Amendola
    Mulligan

    Patriots receive

    Maurice Jones-Drew
    Jason Babin
    Cecil Shorts
    Mercedes Lewis

The only position at which a trade makes sense is DT. A guy unversed in our system could contribute anyway, at least as a rotation player. It's not literally the case that a DT's -- especially an NT's -- job is to stand somewhere and not move, but it's close enough that an simple overview of the playbook might suffice.

Not coincidentally, we have a new DT off the waiver wire almost every week, and one of them has played pretty well.

I hereby propose offering the Broncos a fourth or even a third for Wes.

Yes, I think there is plenty of room in the middle for a Wes and an Amendola and a Gronk.

We need to cater to Brady's strengths and that's the short and middle game. At the very worst, Amendola and Wes and Edleman can spell each other.

Belichick can do a public mea culpa and cause the media's heads to explode (we could only hope) and then he can have a nice fatherly heart to heart with Wes after he personally picks him up from the airport.

Do I think there is any chance of this happening? No. But it's what I would do ;)

ESPN also had Larry Fitz going to Green Bay for a 2nd, Jon Franklin & Jordy Nelson. Seems like a heavy load to give up for GB, and incredibly unrealistic to happen. That being said, Fitz and Rodgers would be fun to watch.

Almost as much fun as Fitz & Brady (when you include my bias).

Pipe dreaming aside (fun to think about offense) - it's hard to imagine the Patriots doing anything that isn't related to DT / LB depth.

I've always liked MJD (can't believe he's only 28, feels like he has been in the league forever). I think we also (as fans) mostly like our RB depth, especially once Vereen returns (if he can stay healthy).

    No Jersey Selected

Being in Jacksonville, I've probably watched more of the Jags than most on here. I would pass on MJD. He looks like a RB that has lost his wheels and would cost a good bit of money. If there's anybody on that team I would absolutely want, it would be Cecil Shorts. With that being said...

The Pats need someone who could step in and play DT. Someone like Kevin Williams from Minnesota.

If they wanted a TE, I'd go after Gonzalez from the Falcons since it's very unlikely they make the play-offs and he wants to win.

Beyond that, the Pats may want to look at Tim Dobbins who just got cut by the Texans as someone for a Coverage LB.

Unless someone goes bargain basement like tampa did with Talib last season i just don't see it happening. I think Belichick is intent with going with what he has and developing the young guys unless a team offers a deal they just can't pass up, and with guys like Allen that would also mean redoing their deal, which is unlikely. I think Belichick wants to hold on to his picks and will actually use free agency and the draft to address their holes this offseason. Imo the interior DL is going to be the biggest need and they are going to have to go both routes to beef it up significantly. Much as i love Wilfork a healthy and successful return is not guaranteed, and overall they just lack depth inside and really need to bring in young talent to shore it up for the future.

I really want Tony Gonzalez. If we can make a trade with the Falcons I think that drives us straight to being a serious contender. The offense would have no more sputtering with a healthy Gonzalez and healthy Gronk in the playoffs.

It would be incredible to have both Gronk and TG on the same field. Is be willing to deal a 3rd for 2 seasons of his service. Some would call that crazy but I've seen this team do worse with that pick.

I read those trade proposals on espn and all of them were so far from reality it was ridiculous. I am just astounded with what espn will allow to be posted. The dumbest things you can ever read end up on their front page.

IF the Vikings were to entertain trading Peterson, they would be smart to call Jerry Jones. That man is just the kind of guy to think his team is "one player away" from winning it all and give up a ridiculous amount to get Peterson.

Talib was not really bargain basement, at the time he was a player suspended by the NFL and coming off the worst season of his career. A fourth round draft pick was actually a very fair trade, fortunately Belichick was able to resign Talib and get him on the right path so now it looks like a steal, and in my opinion it was a very good trade for both teams.

I do agree with what you’re saying overall though I would just add that if Belichick saw a player with tremendous upside and some risk associated he may be willing to trade for him if the demand was not as high as the players talent would normally command. Like if Detriot was sick of dealing with Suh’s antics and Belichick could bring him in for a third round, that is unlikely to ever happen but hopefully you understand what I am getting at a troubled player with some upside if he can be straightened out.
