B5, no offense intended, but we can all read the news. This board is for posting our opinions, not the latest news flash.

Again, I enjoy reading your posts and corresponding, but what's the purpose of starting a thread with simply a link?

What do YOU think about the protests in India?

My hope is that if we have any food shortages that we immediately stop exporting any of it to any foreign nations. Feeding Americans with food raised and grown in America is more important than worrying about food shortages elsewhere.

    Sorry, I thought I included a comment.

My thoughts are that the ethanol experiment has been a humanitarian disaster.

Well, there are a few things going on here. Grains are subsitutable to a certain degree, so when the price of one rises significantly people switch to another thereby driving up the price of the alternative. Second, land has been converted from growing other agricultural goods to growing corn because the ethanol subsidies make it more profitable. For example, in 2008 the price of hops and barley went through the roof (that got my attention):
Beer prices may be going up

I always thought beer was under-priced considering how awesome it is.

But you have to admit that there are factors other than the two you cite. Unrest in the ME that will effect the price of fuel (transportation, fertilizer, etc) and threaten to destabilize the traditional government subsidies of food in that region. Global economic recession that will adjust into inflation if it isn't already. Rising interest rates. Markets often react pro-actively. You can't blame everything on liberals or environmentalists.

I say we quit screwing around and switch from water to Brawndo

The unrest in the ME has been caused in part by the increases in grain price and resulting problems buying food.

Hey, that's what happens when people are stupid enough to live in deserts!

Like that screaming comedian (who's dead) said,

"Come here....you see this? This is sand...you know what grows in sand? NOTHING!!! Move where the food is!":D

Not for nothing but India is one of the poorest Country's in the World. The caste system is alive and well over there so I'm sure that 70%-80% of the population doesn't give a crap as they have to beg for any kind of food.

Good point, Harry. All they need to do is change the religion they've had for thousands of years and McDonalds could swoop in and feed them all for pennies with millions of free livestock roaming the streets. Case solved.
