Source: Herm Edwards not ruled out as Kansas City Chiefs coach yet - ESPN

A source with knowledge of the team's thinking told ESPN's Michael Smith it has not been ruled out that Herm Edwards could return for the final year of his contract as coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Conventional wisdom is that Scott Pioli, who is expected to be introduced as the team's new general manager later Wednesday, will want to hire his own guy, but a source said Pioli is coming in with an open mind.

    HE'S GONNA KEEP HERM!!!!!!

Not sure that isn't a bad move...with only 1 year left...I think since he is still around with Pioli's hiring,he will stay...if he was going to go it would have happened...

Re: Proof that Pioli is still secretly working for the Pats....

If Pioli's guy isn't available until next year, then keeping Herm for a year is fine. They're probably not going to be very good next year anyway, so he'd be a gatekeeper coach. Plus Pioli generates good will with coaches by letting him go gracefully.

Re: Proof that Pioli is still secretly working for the Pats....

Would Cowher come to KC considering he would want some of the powers, if not all the power, that Pioli holds in terms of player personnel? I don't even think that Pioli is looking for a guy like Cowher or Billick to lead his team at this stage of his career. Look at Dmitrioff's hiring in Atlanta. If that can shed any light on the preferences of Pioli, I just don't see Cowher coming in to KC.

On the same note, I see Herm Edwards in a shade of the same light as Cowher. And if he is on the "proverbial" chopping block, why not just cut him now and get the new coach in their with the new system instead of wasting another year of contract money and talent. Unless your looking forward to a high draft pick in 2010 or you think the AFC West is up for grabs (and having some consistency on the team will make them more competitive than tearing it all down) than keep the guy around.

On a happy note for Edwards, if released, he could spend some time with his buddy Dungy this off season.

I would keep Herm too. Pioli essentially has a free pass his first year or two, why not have Herm run his team into a horrible record and then get some top picks to build for a great 3rd year and continued run?

You don't think the AFC west is up for grabs? the leader finished 8-8. With a good offseason this team could compete for the division. Though I think you can compete for the division with or with out Herm. The key here is whether Herm is in line philisophically with Pioli.

Re: Proof that Pioli is still secretly working for the Pats....

    Agreed.

I guess this is what it ultimately comes down to: can the Chiefs win the division in 2009 under Herm more likely than under a new head coach?

You can also inject this thought into the process.

If they did win the AFC West next year under Herm or were competitive enough to fight for a playoff spot, could Pioli afford to release/cut/fire him in 2010? Therefore, could Herm earn a contract extension?

Would Pioli come under fire for not signing him to an extension under these circumstances?

Or would another team bail Pioli out and sign Edwards as their head coach, taking the decision out of Pioli's hands all together?

I can only conclude that you might has well get a new guy in there to avoid all that drama and incorporate the Bill Parcell's three year plan (in which became a one year plan).

That makes sense.....So if Pioli gets in there and likes Herm and wants to work with him than maybe it would be a good Idea to extend is contract another year or two.

Personally I would want to chose my own guy but you have to consider what the orginization thinks of Herm from the players, other coaches, and owners.

Herm's a good motivator. Who's to say he couldn't succeed with the right brains behind him in the front office?

Keeping Herm might not be such a bad idea. He is in his last contract year so would be cheaper than rushing out and just grabbing someone while other teams are already far ahead in the process.

Furthermore, it could well take a year or 2 to get the right players drafted or signed to the Chiefs. In the meantime, they have a bad season in 2009 and so get good draft position for next years (2010) draft. That could be the last draft before rookie salaries shake up and so could be a flood of Juniors declaring deepening the draft pool.

Meanwhile, Herm becomes the fall guy after next years bad season and gets the AX. Then Pioli get the guy he really wants. Maybe he can get Cowher, Shanahan, Holmgren or others who have had time to take a year off and recharge.

So keeping Herm as the stooge and scapegoat might not be so bad afterall. Without a franchaise QB, they are not going to realistically challenge the Chargers or Bronchos any time soon.

The problem with that, is that its really difficult to evaluate talent when the players are playing out of position/scheme. Its tough to evaluate your QB and WRs when Herm wants to run the ball 50 times a game.

My question is the same: Why would Cowher, Shanahan, and Holmgren come to KC when they have all had more power on player personnel with the Steelers, Broncos and Seahawks (respectively)?

And Pioli is finally out on his own and not having to run decisions through Belichick... does he want to go back to that? He did win the VP of the Year award twice that way.

    LOL:D

I just remember when Ty Law said he wanted to play for Herm because Herm didn't make him work as hard; like let him skip meetings, etc lol.

Herm's also pretty cool though; wasn't he the one waving at the Pats' cameras :D Herm's been around a long time; he doesn't have much of a record but he seems like he gets it when it comes to the reality of what goes on. Like BB, Herm knows where some bodies are buried.
