I'm kinda lukewarm to this signing. How much does Taylor have left? He was mediocre last year (556 yards, 1 TD, 3.9 YPC), but the Jags o-line was a mess. But he did lose a lot of carries to Maurice Jones Drew.

If he signs for short money, it is a no lose situation. But I ain't expecting much if he does.

The feature back is dead. Situational RB groupings are the future of the position. They are cost-effective, it keeps their health up and it's the most physically taxing position in the game. Taylor will be a very solid contributor to this team.

I started a new thread intentionally . . . I knew it might get merged but when the info changes sometimes it's best to start a new thread with a more grabbing headline as old threads have sometimes deteriorated and people stop reading them and miss the new news.

At this point in his career I think 10 to 15 touches per game is about right for Fred Taylor.

After visiting both the Patriots and Bills over the past few days, it is believed that free agent running back Fred Taylor will sign with New England.

Both teams made contract offers to the 11-year veteran, but the Patriots' recent run of success may have tipped the balance for Taylor, who has seen two players close to him -- cousin Santonio Holmes with the Steelers and friend Plaxico Burress with the Giants -- win Super Bowl rings, something Taylor hasn't had a chance to come close to achieving yet.

He will be a good addition to the running back by committee.

I think the cap hit is too big if they let him go, likely one of the other backs goes if they need a spot.

BJGE. The guy did a nice job filling in against some poor defenses, but I think a lot of people on this board have gotten way too hyped up about him. He could be a solid backup option, but we're not developing our RB of the future here.

Well, look at it this way. Jim Brown once called Taylor the best RB in football. And while the RB-by-committee approach seems fine on paper, make no mistake, Taylor will most likely receive the bulk of the carries as part of the RB rotation.
