Has anyone watched parts 1 & 2? It premiered on Monday and part 3 is tonight.

I have found it fascinating so far. The amount of corruption and crime it caused was staggering as was the states vs federal government arguments that continue to this day.

I'm sure it will be on plenty of more times so check it out if you get the chance.

PBS does some outstanding work in these areas.. Restrepo was over the top.

Haven't seen Restrepo but will take a look when I get the chance.

The thing about the Prohibition documentary so far is that you can't legislate moral issues. There were so many non-drinking, law abiding citizens, that gave a big middle finger to the Federal Government and started their own bootlegging operations.

Ray Olmstead in Seattle as a great example. Then there are the story's of bootleggers walking into the Capital Building in DC and dropping off booze. Crazy stuff.

Done some reading about it, and how it spawned a whole new illicit industry.. we are still dealing with the "mob" today..

PBS does some excellent stuff, it is oft criticized, but their some of their in depth stuff is over the top.. it is definitely not something for the "short attention theater" folks or those who rely on soundbites.

Sorry Restrepo was on Nat Geo.. not PBS.. but excellent all the same, Sebastian Unger did most of the work..

Saw that Restrepo was a Nat Geo thing. Will take a look.

The Prohibition doc is from Ken Burns. Not sure how many people in this day and age can watch a 6 hour documentary even if it presented in 2 hour blocks.

Prohibition is one of their best, you will probably see the legalization of all drugs in your lifetime.

The people wanted their booze and they got it.
Now the people want their drugs and they will get it.

America has tried waging a "War On Drugs" America has lost that war, the people want their drugs and the people will get them.

Pot will be legal relatively soon. More people now understand it's much less dangerous than alcohol, and few people fall for the "conservative" demonization of its use (so often by people who love their booze...)

I doubt it. Most of the current GOP presidential candidates want to pass an amendment to the constitution banning gay marriage.

We have a long way to go when it comes to "moral*" issues.

    *By moral I mean Christian

Even gay marriage is becoming much more accepted, the right wing of the GOP notwithstanding.

Pot's a more benign issue, as religion and homophobia aren't involved.

We will see pot legalized, maybe not in............Utah (pick one). Already, many states sell for health reasons, and it is way, way, too strong. Some states allow you to grow. A lot of you guys live in Ma., isn't it legal to some degree?
I like that era of prohibition, one of my favorites from an historical point of view. A favorite show (which is somewhat accurate) is Boardwalk Empire on HBO. Has a Sopranos flavor to it.

way too strong? where? not in CA, imo -- though it's far better than the crap you'd buy off the street years ago

Boardwalk Empire is a good show. haven't seen this season's episodes yet, though

My mother and aunts went to the same grammar school as Al Capone's son went to in the late 20's. My mom would tell us stories of birthday parties which, if you were invited to, your parents had to sign a permission slip before you could go to their house.

She also said that if invited, your attendance was pretty much mandatory.

She also said that, truthfully, he did lots of good things for families in his neighborhood. Everyone was scared to death of him, but he donated alot of money, food and other necessities during the depression which helped a whole lot of people.

Some people here like criminals like that. If they're white, anyway.

As long as this faux morality/dominionism tries to creep into and take over our politics this will never change....

Every day there is a new effort to take something away that has been gained, this morning Bachman is pledging to do away with the current policy of gays in the military.. as long as Rush et al rules the airwaves, and conservative blogger create hysteria on the internet nothing will change.

The right has done a very good job with their message, reefer madness is alive and well in our society.

This season is ok, my big problem is there are too many characters and too many scenarios and not enough introduction into who is who and what sitz is what sitz. Somewhat confusing..

OT: That's part of why I haven't watched yet -- want to see at least a couple episodes at a time so that I can get into it and remember what's up.

The deal in MA is that there are no criminal penalties for possession of an ounce or less (civil fines only).

Let's not kid ourselves. We live in another era of prohibition, although this one has actually created a civil war in Mexico.
