8. Patriots ILB Jerod Mayo (1-10)
Week Seven stats: Eight tackles
Season stats: 42 tackles, one tackle for loss
Last week’s ranking: 10
After taking a series to adjust to Michael Pittman and the Broncos’ rushing attack, Mayo was a beast the rest of the way. Yet almost as encouraging as Mayo’s development has been the stunningly effective play fellow rookie LB Gary Guyton. Undrafted out of Georgia Tech, Guyton’s raw ability — his 40-yard time at the Combine led all linebackers — prompted the Pats to pick him up as a free agent, and he hasn’t disappointed. With Tedy Bruschi nearing the end of his career, Mayo and Guyton could form a potent ILB tandem down the line.

They have Mayo ranked as the #2 defensive rookie behind Redskins S Chris Horton...

From their keyboard to God's monitor. :rocker: :rocker:

Mayo better watch out. Vernon Gholston got another whole tackle this week vs. the Raiders. He's up to 6 tackles, 0 for loss, and 0 sacks for the season. He is breathing down Mayo's neck in the DROY race.

:agree:

How ridiculous is that ranking when Matt Ryan is #4, behind the mediocre Matt Forte? Ryan is the clear #1, far ahead of even rb C. Johnson, who has been great also. Bizarre.

I agree Forte's been average so far how he's up that high is confusing.

Why the hell is Jake Long not top 3?

That is one stupid list.

They probably looked at total yardage vs ypc C Johnson 5.3 -Forte 3.5

i dont think forte has been just average...hes been a bit better...the running game of the bears last yr was worse then negative...

however, ryan an dhis play are a clear number 1...

Chris Johnson is the obvious RoY right now. His team is undefeated and he's the star of that offense.

Which is why the NFL has separate OROY and DROY awards, because it's so much harder for defensive rookies to have a major impact the way offensive rookies do.

uh...i checked those stats right after the game on ESPN and they listed Gholston...wait..they didn't even list him as having played...don't know where that "tackle" came from.

From NFL.com
4-4-NYJ 16 (7:55) 6-R.Hodges punts 50 yards to OAK 34, Center-85-J.Dearth. 15-J.Higgins to OAK 45 for 11 yards (56-V.Gholston)

BTW--here's Gary Guyton's contributions. Yeah, I know it's unfair to compare a top-10 draft pick to a UDFA, but, hey, they're both linebackers. :D
3-S.Gostkowski kicks 60 yards from NE 30 to DEN 10. 23-A.Hall to DEN 33 for 23 yards (18-M.Slater, 59-G.Guyton).
3-S.Gostkowski kicks 58 yards from NE 30 to DEN 12. 23-A.Hall to DEN 34 for 22 yards (58-P.Woods, 59-G.Guyton).

Oh, whoops. Those are just the ST contributions. ;) Here's his contributions on D:
3-7-DEN 30 (14:01) 28-M.Pittman up the middle to DEN 39 for 9 yards* (59-G.Guyton).
1-10-NE 38 :)25) (Shotgun) 11-P.Ramsey sacked at NE 44 for -6 yards (99-M.Wright). FUMBLES (99-M.Wright) [99-M.Wright], RECOVERED by NE-59-G.Guyton at NE 43. 59-G.Guyton to 50 for 7 yards (74-R.Harris).
3-14-DEN 8 (9:40) (Shotgun) 28-M.Pittman left guard to DEN 16 for 8 yards* (59-G.Guyton, 37-R.Harrison).

WTF wasn't he drafted again? :D

*Remember the Pats D spent much of the game in a nickel formation.

yeah,CT...he was added to the ESPN stat sheet with one tackle...must have been revised on Monday...I posted the game stats right after it ended on W.C. just to stomp on Idiot Idiot's blabberings...wait til he finds out the "Lonely Walks Down By The Pond" guy actually made A play.

Matt Ryan is playing QB as a rookie and leading a previously moribund team to a winning record, on the strength of his arm, not as a caretaker.

Johnson is on a team that made the playoffs last season and had one of the top defenses in the NFL. He is one rb in a two headed backfield. A very good player, but no comparison with a top notch rookie QB for ROY.

I'm hearing an early buzz that Gholston is going to be a bust. I wouldn't make a decision this early in somebody's career personally, but Jet's fans have to be bumming so far.
