Artrell Hawkins was our best safety last year. You figure he went downhill that much?

I agree with this prediction, although I think I'd keep Guss Scott and cut either T-Buck or Mitchell (most likely Mitchell).

Guss suckss!

:D

Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

Seriously, he's frail and can't cover. He was awful at Florida, where he was picked on frequently and gave up too many big plays. And he was dreadful in the games he played in 2005. Why the Pats picked him, I'll never know. Another poster theorized that Scott and Dexter Reid were panic picks after the Colts took Bob Sanders in the 2004 draft.

Moreover, IMO, some of the UDFA DBs stand a better chance to win a spot than Gussss.

Scott will be training camp fodder, Jones will be too slow. Andrews will make the team for ST. If that doesn't pan out, he's gone.

Rodney Harrison
Artrell Hawkins
Mel Mitchell or Tebucky Jones ( not both)
James Sanders

Eric Warfield

These are my picks:

Safety (10)
Rodney Harrison - starts season on PUP
Artrell Hawkins - team
Jarvis Herring - cut - maybe on practice squad
Keon Jackson - cut - maybe on practice squad
Tebucky Jones - team
Mel Mitchell - team
James Sanders - team
Guss Scott - cut
Ray Ventrone - cut
Eugene Wilson - team

Cornerback (10)
Willie Andrews - team
Vernell Brown - cut - maybe practice squad
Randall Gay - team
Ellis Hobbs - team
Hank Poteat - cut
Asante Samuel - team
Chad Scott - team
Antwain Spann - cut
Eric Warfield - team
Gemara Williams - cut - maybe practice squad

Overall I predict 11 DBs and 10 LBs and 6 DLs, for a total of 27 on defense.

Cornerbacks
Starters: Asante Samuel & Ellis Hobbs
Chad Scott
Randall Gay
Eric Warfield
Artrell Hawkins
Maybe Willie Andrews for special teams...maybe...

Safetys
Starters: Eugene Wilson & Rodney Harrison
Guss Scott
James Sanders
Tebucky Jones(Scott, Sanders, Jones in no particular order)
Mel Mitchell....mostly for special teams

6 safetys & 7 CB's. Nice defensive backfield.

Ray Ventrone: cut
Eugene Wilson: team

Mitchell, G Scott & T buck playing for 2 spots, possible 1 IF Harris, W Andrews or K Jones earns a spot via ST & shows some upside.

Cornerback (10)
Willie Andrews: PS
Vernell Brown: PS
Randall Gay: team
Ellis Hobbs: team
Hank Poteat: cut, shadow squad
Asante Samuel: team
Chad Scott: team
Antwain Spann: cut
Eric Warfield: team
Gemara Williams[/QUOTE]

I like this group, a lot of youth & depth. Will be a very competitive camp.
