On Will Smith:

Belichick doesn't sign a top shelf veteran like Smith because he needs him to come in and light it up in the first two preseason games to impress the media "pundits".

Of course, Belichick could be changing, He did cut Brandon LaFell after OTAs because the crack media analyists said he was worthless, so you never know...

Will Smith is also coming off a season ending injury last year. His skill level is greater than any DL on this team not named Chandler or Vince. The fact that he hasn't set the world on fire in 2 preseason games is meaningless. Unless somehow he just doesn't have it any more, which certainly isn't what the film shows, he has a big role on this team.
Those thinking he should have 6 sacks by now or he sucks, don't understand the player he is. Smith is a well-rounded, solid DE who can play the run and the pass equally well, and is not a 'pass rush specialist'.
His role here will be to play LDE in the base, spelling Ninkovich, and to rush from the DT spot in nickel/dime.
He will be a very important piece of this defense.
And no he doesnt need to 'show something' in a preseason game.

Wouldn't he need to show that he's fully healthy and hasn't lost a step? Or are we assuming a 33 year old coming off a major injury is guaranteed to not have declined?

That is something you show throughout the preseason. I took the comment as an implication that his job depends on making plays in the next preseason game.

Here's where i am ATM:

QB (3) Brady, Mallett, Garoppolo
RB (5) Ridley, Vereen, White, Bolden
FB (1) Develin
WR (6) Edelman, Amendola, LaFell, Thompkins, Dobson, Boyce
TE (2) Gronkowski, Hoomanawanui
C (2) Connolly, Stork
G (3) Mankins, Kline, Barker
T (4) Solder, Vollmer, Cannon, Fleming
DE (5) Jones, Ninkovich, Buchanan, Moore
DT (6) Wilfork, Kelly, Vellano, Worthy
ILB(2) Mayo, Beauharnais
OLB(3) Collins, Hightower, Anderson
CB (5) Revis, Dennard, Arrington, Ryan, Butler
SS (3) Harmon, Wilson, Chung
FS (1) McCourty
ST (5) Gostkowski, Allen, Aiken, Slater, Ebner

Total players: 53
Created with Pats Picker: http://patspicker.patsfans.com

PUP: Jones, Silinga, Easley (one of these may have the designation to return)
SUS: Tyms, Browner

Basically the 2 suspensions save IMO Boyce and Ebner.

Jones, Silinga and Easley all aren't ready. Easley could be the PUP designated to return or maybe Silinga. But I am happy to stash them for now.

I let Wendel go because i don't think anyone will pick him up with all of last year's tape. I believe if there are injuries to the interior that we couldresign him pretty cheaply and have that experience there.

Preseason game three could have tons of injuries and throw these roster mocks into the landfill.

I'm assuming that you meant IR rather than PUP; none of those three are eligible for PUP.

That would leave one of those three available for IR with designation to return, and the other two lost for the entire season on IR.

There are only two players that have not practiced at all and therefore eligible for that designation:
OL Chris Martin (NFI), and WR Jeremy Gallon (PUP).

Is Worthy eligible for the PUP list?

The open question is whether Smith has anything left. If Patricia thinks that he does, then there he is a very, very valuable backup at a cost of less $600K.

I have a similar attitude towards Worthy, although he comes with more question marks than Smith.

We could have Ninkovich, Jones, Buchanan, Smith and Worthy. I think that this is a pretty good DL. We can afford to have 2 dinged up and still have a pretty good DL.

We may not keep them all, but we can if they are able. We don't NEED 6 linebackers and 5 safeties.

That is what I have been saying. Only 4 LBs merit keeping, Keep 4.

That leaves you with only one reserve for three starting positions.

Typically you would want your starter/reserve ratio to be 1:1, or close to it on a 53-man roster. 22 starters times two equals 44 players, leaving six additional roster spots for positions that take extra players for specific down and distance situations (such as third down running back, nickel back, extra receivers for three and four wide formations, etc.)

I would find four linebackers to be too few, and that's before considering that reserve linebackers typically get a large percentage of special teams snaps.

It's more that earlier this week I reached out to Joker in PM to try and put an end to our differences and he didn't even respond but he has plenty of time to pull play details from the game book and add 2 paragraphs of angry commentary to it because I dared to question his post.

Lately I have attempted to go to PM rather than get Into feuds in threads and it amazes me how many posters will run off at the mouth and pollute the threads fighting but in a 1on1 setting they say nothing because there is no audience for them to show off to. The other day I had a poster respond to me not to PM him and the proceed to return to the thread and respond to my PM for everyone to see. Apparently internet fighting is a spectator sport.

I wish there were more posters like you who are pleasant to interact with.

I told Joker how to block unwanted PMs from posters. I don't for the life of me know why you think sending long boring PMs to people you don't like is some sort of positive thing.

PMs are for people you want to talk to.

If you don't want people to see what you have to say, maybe you should keep it to yourself. That's what I do.

PMs are actually for posters to speak 1on1 without an audience, there is not any requirements of liking or disliking the person. You however have no interest in a 1on1 discussion because it does not have an audience to show off for and try and get attention from. You pollute threads with your nonsense, the majority of your posting is stuff like this when you go around trying to get into confrontations or are in a confrontation with another poster. If you actually wanted to say what you say to me or any other poster for sincere reasons you would be willing to say it in a PM because saying it would be the priority. That is not your priority and we both know it, your priority is as I said getting attention from other posters.

I do not have time for you, honestly, I am so tired of your shenanigans, you are not a football fan, you are not a Patriots fan, you are bored person who uses this forum for malicious reasons. Moving forward unless you intend to speak about actual football please do not quote my posts or attempt to interact with me in threads, if you want argue at least be man enough to do it 1on1 and not for public consumption.

When did Will Smith become a top shelf veteran? Last I checked he was a player who had not played football in almost 2 full seasons, was cut from his last team, and was on the UFA market until almost May with a lack of interest.

He did not cut LaFell because LaFell was actually a significant UFA signing, not a 33 year old on a 1 year prove deal with no guaranteed money. Also LaFell had issues in OTAs due to learning a new offense, he is not doing horrible in week 2 of the preseason. Smith is also 0-11 in 1on1 drills during practice this camp. He is done

is this the part where Rayclay and B6 start making out due to all the sexual tension between the two?

Last year that would have been true, but not now that the depth at DE is better. Ninkovitch was, and could still star at LB in an emergency, giving you five good LBs in reality. Meanwhile the need has decreased with the sub 4-2-5 formations now prevalent.

I think Slater, listed as a WR, & Ebner nominally a S, are really the best ST specialists extent, and much better than Chris White, the ST guru reserve LB.

After that, Chung & Wilson are big S, and fast, small, LB-sized ST candidates, who are MUCH, MUCH better on regular defensive snaps than White. They are fine ST players as well.

I suspect that you actually upgrade ST with them, versus using White and some other reserve LB, you chose to keep for that ostensible purpose.
