Only Gostkowski, Mayo and perhaps Logan Mankins can be considered "hits"

everyone else including Maroney, Dave Thomas and yes even Ben Watson have really disappointed. There are several that it is too early to judge.. (e.g. Wheatley and Wilhite)

But can we agree that BB/Pioli drafts the past 3 years have been disappointing and will hurt the club in the long run?

I thought the 2nd and 4th round pick from last year turned out to be some what decent WRs.

Even Mankins has been below average this year - Several DL have made Mankins their b!tch in games this season and part of the problem of the whole OL which is just letting 2 sacks away from the sack total that Brady had last year

19 sacks in 5 games is deplorable anyway you want to slice it and Mankins is a part to blame

We have had to over-compensate for McDaniels' deficiencies by burning high draft choices and trades on the offensive side, at the detriment of the defense.

Why do we have to go over this seemingly 500 times each season? The 2005 draft class alone kills your argument.

    Mankins (Starter)
    Hobbs (Starter)
    Kaczur (Starter)
    Sanders (Starter)
    Cassel

That's 4 starters and the #2 QB from a draft without a second round pick.

Take out 05 and it really starts to look bad.

Who in the scouting or drafting department left after 04 or 05?

    Correction:

    Mankins (Starter)
    Hobbs (Starter)
    Kaczur (Starter)
    Sanders (Starter)
    Cassel (Starter)

He got his starting job the same way Brady did.

I like the 2008 youngster additions so far and yes, I agree it's really WAY too soon to tell for sure.

Those of us criticizing the past drafts including myself always need to remember what BB did with last year's 2nd & 4th rounds.

Assistant Director of Player Personnel Jason Licht left after 2002.

Andre Tippett (Assistant Director of Pro Scouting) was transferred out of scouting after 2003.

Assistant Director of Pro Scouting Keith Kidd left (was fired?) after 2004.

Assistant Director of College Scouting Lionel Vital left after 2004.

Nick Caserio spent 2007 out of personnel.

    Thomas Dimitroff left after 2007.

Scouting wise, they've lost a few scouts along the way - Matt Russell, Sean Gustus, Jake Hallum.

2006 has produced 2 starters and 3 backups that are still with the team (It's 3 starters and 2 backups if you count Thomas as a starter when NFL.com has him starting 4 of the 5 games so far this season), along with players who are still in the NFL on other teams.

2007 yielded Meriweather, Welker and Moss for the Patriots, as well as a bunch of players who couldn't crack the Patriots roster but are on other teams throughout the league.

While it's too soon to know what 2008 is really going to yield, Mayo is already starting, and Wheatley and Wilhite are already getting playing time.

How exactly does that look like bad drafting, taking into account the obvious variables of 2007 being weak draft year, draft picks being used to trade for veterans, the fact that players were trying to make the best team in the NFL, etc...?

I would amend your statement to read with the exception of the
2005 draft, the Patriots drafts from 2004 to 2008 have been
    disappointing.

The 2004 draft yielded Wilfork and Watson. Watson has not
shown the consistency expected of a #1 draft pick.

The 2005 draft yielded 5 starters (Cassel included). I would
would argue that Kaczur, Sanders and Cassel are no balls of fire.

The 2006 draft gave the Pats Maroney, Jackson, Thomas,
Gostowski, and O'Callahan. All but Gostowski have had problems
    with injuries.

The 2007 draft produced Brandon Meriweather. Forum members
include Welker and Moss as part of this draft. The trade was made
for Welker because the Pats were in dire need of WRs and their
second round choice would not have given them a starter. Moss
had the Raiders over a barrel and wanted to play with Tom Brady.
The fact remains that the Pats have only one player from the
2007 draft on their 53 man roster from the eight players drafted.
The Giants won the Superbowl with a roster that contained all
of their 2007 draft picks. A lousy draft for the Pats was a good
draft for the Giants. How come?

It is too early to judge the 2008 draft but it is disappointing that only
player is receiving significant playing time. We have a lousy pass
rush yet Crable is on the inactive list every game. One bright spot
has been the play of Guyton.

Pats 1 mentions the losses in the scouting department. Maybe this
    has been a factor.

Yeah, we really clearly screwed up considering we only won one superbowl and two AFCChampionships and three AFCE crowns and made it to at least the second round of the playoffs four times in those four seasons and would have been prohibitive favorites to repeat most or all of the above had our HOF QB from the 2000 draft not been lost in week 1 of this season...

Why couldn't we have performed as well over that stretch as great drafting teams like Dallas or the Giants or Indy or Pittsburgh or Tennessee or... Oh, wait...:ugh:

Compared to the quality of the 01-04 drafts, the Pats have really dropped off in drafting.

Who left the Pats college or scouting departments in 04 or 05?

    #3 Jersey

And let's not forget that the Pats have also picked up one or two UDFAs that have made the active roster. . . . one or two UDFAs a year, that is.

As Jimke pointed out, you really have to consider the result of what was done with the draft picks - which means you need to include Welker and Moss - if you are going to rate the success of drafts. To take it to an extreme, what would be the point of saying a team drafted poorly if they traded away all but their last round picks?
