There is plenty of room for upgrades. I have 10 OL's, but one will likely give way to a 3rd QB.
===============================================

12 POSITIONS FOR UPGRADE
#4 OT Britt
#4 WR Kight (the need is really for a #1 receiver)
#5 WR Childress/Sullivan/Brown
#4 DE Hill/Thomas
#7 DL Smith
#5 LB Alexander
#6 LB Woods
#3 CB Scott
#4 CB Gay
#4 S Hawkins
#3 ST Baker
#4 ST Spann

This presumes that Samuel and Harrison will available for Game One.

I'm sure we'll see either an additional drafted lb or db in the first round

and another o-lineman in the first 4 rounds.

I think that Chad Jackson is ahead of Kight on the depth chart.
I think we won't be spending anything on upgrading the #5 WR that is inactive. We will probably look for some UDFAs to compete for that job.
I agree adding a DL looks like an easy upgrade.
I think one more vet LB should be brought in (plus maybe a jag) and then the rest of your list---LB,CB,S should come in the draft.

Based on recent reports from Tomase, Jackson could be ready for training camp, so he won't be a PUP. He's already an upgrade over Kight.

I think maybe some of those get upgrades you list get upgraded in the draft. We've filled so many holes in free agency that the draft can really address these needs you lay out.

My main question now is can the OL be upgraded? I honestly have no idea how to judge OL play other than what is visible to the naked eye in pass protection and the running game. They are great at keeping Brady safe, but the running game was inconsistent...is any of that due to the OL? Can it be upgraded? Or all we all set there? Hopefully some more informed folks than I could chime in on this issue.

Anybody know the typical 45 that dressed last season?

I'm for upgrading any position if they can find a better player than they currently have.

Yes, Jackson might be ready for Training Camp. I will take him off my PUP list as soon as he participates in practice. I don't think we'll rush him back this time.

Of course, Jackson is ahead of Kight if he is healthy enough to play.

I agree...there's no reason to rush him back into games, but it would definitely be preferable if he had the training camp experience. Think of how much that hindered him and held him back all season. I'm really hoping he's able to participate in TC.

Do you mean Asante Samuel? Why wouldn't he be ready? Also, I really like Saubeurn for the last 4 games - much better leg than Miller. Any chance he is signed.

Do you think Jackson will be PUP'd?

Have you heard that6 for sure anywhere?

Because, if not, I consider ahead of Kight on the depth chart, right behind Welker (Gaffney/Caldwell/Welker/Jackson), assuming #80 hangs 'em up, of course.

I do not understand where Mays, Woods and Alexander are in terms of development. Particularly the first two, are they ST'ers or are they potential guys who can work themselves into the starting lineup? Was not impressed with Alexander, seems to have limited abilities and may have started because fo the familiarity with our system, rather than based on his ability. Here we can bring back Seau, and bring in some young LB's they will certainly get trained well on how to play LB for the Pats and as well as learn how to act in the NFL.

I consider someone with a torn ACL to be unavailable for a year, until he appears on the practice field.

I'm sure we have hopes for all three. However, they have shown little to anyone thus far. Also, I believe they were also all UDFA's. So, for me, these guys are STer's until further notice. The question for me is whether they are top STer's like Andrews, or just fill-ins because we have no one else.

I agree that we still have some holes on the team.

Our starting linebacking has been solidified but we need a couple of

veteran backups. We could do this by a combination of re-signing

TBC or Seau or by signing free agents. I'd also like to see us get a veteran

cornerback and a veteran wide receiver to stretch the field.

We can use the draft to supplement free agency and obtain a big running

back, 3rd string quarterback, wide receiver, safety, and cornerback.

These players would bump many of the weak links mentioned by the

poster of this thread.

Obviously, the f/o signs the best players they can in FA and the draft ... then brings them to camp.
In camp and preseason 80 and more (NFLE exemption) guys battle it out to show who is best.
Certain spots we see can be improved and hope to upgrade.

But in the course of "battling it out", gladiators fall. We end up with some lesser players
who merely didn't get injured.

This is why ... until the eve of the final cutdown ... i scheme with a 60-man roster.
It allows for attrition.
Unfortunately, in the 3 or 4 years i've been mocking rosters, the team has never made that look bad
by avoiding wholesale injuries.

This SHALL be the year we avoid wholesale injuries.
But still, i'll work with a nominal 60 until the dog days of August.

I consider someone with a torn ACL to be unavailable for a year, until he appears on the practice field.

How many players who tore an ACL got surgery within a few days?
