Amazing that he made it this long. I liked them a lot better after he "left" anyway.

Yes -- everyone assumed that he was already gone. (He was the only PF person I liked.)

I agree, on both counts. Quite how he made it this far is anyone's guess. Now, what song would you play at his funeral? Dark Side of the Moon? Goodbye Cruel World?

Sorry to hear that. I understand the band member took care of him over the years. I liked to early PF stuff with Syd.

I can only be Shine On You Crazy Diamond

    Remember when you were young
    You shone like the sun.
    Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky.
    Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire
    Of childhood and stardom
    Blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr and shine.
You reached for the secret too soon,
    You cried for the moon.
    Shine on you crazy diamond.
    Threatened by shadows at night,
    And exposed in the light.
    Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome
    With random precision,
    Rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine.

Probably none of the above since he didn't write or perform any of those songs or albums

No doubt the continuing members found quite a bit of "inspriation" in his mental illness - Dark Side of course was a bit of a rock opera about him, but its none too flattering... nor did "Wish You Were Here" pull any punches, though I'd bet that "Shine on..." winds up being the tribute song ("Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun; Shine on you crazy diamond; Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.")

But as far as "making it this far" lots of people live for a very long time with Diabetes, so its not all that surprising... his mental illness, exacerbated by a LOT of LSD didn't leave him as a functioning member of society, but given the Pink Floyd royalties he received, he lived quite comfortably from what I understand

"A Pillow of Winds" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" are excellent choices. Funny, the first song that came to my mind was "Interstellar Overdrive" for Syd is now going on the ultimate cosmic journey.

Living your life to the thresholds of sanity tends to shorten it dramatically.

That being said, I have lost a few years myself.

Syd was well before his time.

He got kicked out of his own band!!!!

Shine on you crazy diamond is a tribute to him.

It is VERY sad..there is NO question about it..he really made the early band!!
Helped a lot at the start..but?? Too much LSD and drugs and?? He basically lived quietly and peacefully..and.. Well..it was very sad..the PFloyd of Barrett's day far from the version that was mainstream and filled with more success.. RIP SB....

I was discussing his death with colleagues today and it suddenly dawned on me that I had missed out that song. D'oh! :bricks:

I was thinking more of the strange drugs than the Diabetes, but you make a good point all the same.

Me too, I wasn't thinking about the diabetes.

Someone at work today brought this up and was able to recite the words to Shine on You Crazy Diamond in a most impressive way; he also seemed to have way more inimite knowledge about LSD than I would have expected

I guess everyone had this perception that he was on life support after doing too much LSD and was just barely alive, not that halucinogens work that way.

That was never the case as far as I knew - he just couldn't function in society as the psychadelics made a bad mental state worse.

I'm probably in the minority on Syd Barrett - I don't think the band had evolved past some wacky trippy musical experiment and it wasn't until Roger Waters took the reigns that he shaped the music into a higher art form.

Now the more recent version of Pink Floyd sans Waters is a joke in my opinion - even though I like David Gilmore's work - even his solo work - they might as well be a Pink Floyd cover band without Roger Waters.

By the way - the "Pros and Cons of Hitchiking", a Roger Waters solo album from the 1980s - is worth a listen. Just imagine Pink Floyd with Eric Clapton on Guitar and David Sanborn on Sax and you've got an idea - not as good as pure Pink Floyd, but definately worth the price of admission.

I understand that he had issues before any drugs. Gilmore in an interview speculated that strobe lights used in early PF concerts contributed to his problems?

Sort of a British Brian Wilson.
