Just for reference

2007
6 Washington Laron Landry FS LSU
7 Minnesota* Adrian Peterson RB Oklahoma
8 Atlanta (from Houston) Jamaal Anderson DE Arkansas

2006
6 San Francisco Vernon Davis TE Maryland
7 Oakland Michael Huff DB Texas
8 Buffalo Bonte Whitner DB Ohio State

2005
6 Tennessee Pacman Jones CB West Virginia
7 Minnesota (from Oakland) Troy Williamson WR South Carolina
8 Arizona Antrel Rolle CB Miami

2004
6 Cleveland (from Detroit) Kellen Winslow TE Miami
7 Detroit (from Cleveland) Roy Williams WR Texas
8 Atlanta DeAngelo Hall CB Virginia Tech

Widely reported that Belichick really admired Dante Hall coming out that year... and Hall has proven to be a great pro.

The rest of the list... all household names, for better or worse. But is this cohort of talent that much better than the players taken a dozen picks later?

2007
(18) Cinci - CB Leon Hall
(19) Tenn - S Micheal Griffin
(20) Giants - GB Aaron Ross

2006
(18) Dallas - LB Bobby Carpenter
(19) Chargers - CB Antonio Cromartie
(20) KC - DE Tamba Hali

2005
(18) Vikes - DE Erasmus James
(19) Rams - OT Alex Barron
(20) Dallas - DE Marcus Spears

2004
(18) Saints - DE/LB Will Smith
(19) Fins - OT Vernon Carey
(20) Vikes - DE Kenechi Udeze

Hall, Griffin, Ross, Carpenter, Hali, James, Spears, Smith would all look good in a Pats uni. Will Smith is a guy that BB reportedly tried to trade up for, and has become a star for the NO D. Ross looked outstanding in Game 16 for a rookie.

I kinda think this group is as compelling as the boom or bust group at #6-8.

Excellent research, your point is well taken.

After watching the Giants game, I think that the Pats have to seriously consider moving Thomas back inside next season and drafting the best pass rusher they can get their hands on for 2008, to be the third OLB in rotation with Vrabel and Colvin, if he returns.

I watched Alabama play last night and focused on Wallace Gilberry, 6'3" and about 265-270 lbs. He led the SEC in tackles for loss and he was second in sacks. After playing a year for Saban, it is easy to see BB being interested in him on day 2.

I'd agree with you Rook. Those picks look just about as good - maybe 90% ... but at 1/3 the price AND New Englands ability to not miss in the lower first it's VERY compelling to trade down if possible.

The dream would be to move from #7 to a 2008 #1 around #25 AND a 2009 #1... I suspect that the league is wising up to be being burnt by these sorts of deals though. I'd take a trade that got us to something in the 15-25 range plus a second in the same part of that round.

BTW, please no one talk to me about the "draft chart" - I believe it may have been used heavily at one time but now is way over-hyped and overrated by draftniks and the media simply because it's the only piece of info like it...
