Economic and social conservatism is on the decline...

This is very good news. The "conservative movement" is truly dead.

Yeah, really great news. More and more people think the government should provide for the citizens, fewer and fewer people considering marriage to be an important institution and less and less people of faith in the country.

All those tenets worked so great for the USSR

Canada's ever worse.... no, if I were to ever emigrate it would be to a country where you can say "Merry Christmas" without getting arrested and the people actually speak English.

and... what a surprise!... the two parties passed eachother in different directions right around the time Boy King and his henchmen started publicly making up reasons to rape a sovereign nation...

I'm starting to wonder if it's a natural evolution of societies to ruin themselves this way. More people see government as a way to get theirs, get something for nothing. Why work ?

It's basically the problem I have with illegal immigration combined with the growing welfare state. Either one, by itself, is probably a small, maybe a non, factor. But combine them and you have a country that will collapse all over itself.

For me, I don't give a crap. I'm 40; I have saved money, I'll be fine. My kids and their kids - that's a grave concern.

On the 3rd grade field trip I was on with my son today, btw, there was a class whose teacher spoke only (in the time I saw them) in Spanish. Nice. What do you think the odds of those kids needing government assistance are compared to the odds of the kids in my kids' class with (shock) a teacher speaking in English.

Now that I actually looked at your links, that's a ridiculous conclusion. The Democrats are on the upswing on normal, cyclic patterns. Nothing else can be drawn from these charts, especially the supposed death of Conservatives.

Re: Pew Poll: America trending Democratic; economic and social conservatism on declin

The "conservative movement" was supposed to give us a permanent Republican majority or so said the genius Karl Rove. That's completely wasted. One of their most a high profile, no- nonsense leaders barely escaped prison. Gingrich can't even poll 10% in a lacklustre GOP field. Their war is as popular as the Vietnam War was in its' hayday.

Other than slight majorites in '94 and '02 the GOP has constantly been second fiddle to the Democrats in terms of numbers since the Great Depression. Now the gap is widening even more as people have seen for themselves the effects of the "conservative movement".

Conservativism is a losing philosophy. It does hold back the tide of change and give a country a chance to reflect and evaluate that change, but it's hard to think of many conservative victories.

In different era, conservatives (both Democrat and Republican) lost their fight for slavery, against women's suffrage, against civil rights for blacks and gays, against Social Security and Medicaid, against income tax, against agencies like the FDA and OSAH, against the minimum wage and 40 hour work week, against environmental protection, against the UN, and so on. It's pretty hard to think of a significant conservative victory that's stood the test of time. I'm not surprised the country is waking up again.

Have to see about them loosing their jobs, that seems to be a stretch of the right wing imagination.... or maybe just wishful thinking.

I can't believe anyone would believe this poll, when was it taken during the day when most people were at work? If we are going to govern by bull**** polls as these leftys would want, why don't we just abandon our form of government and we could log on our computers everyday and vote on every issue.

So the closest republican have been was tied at 43% in 02, yeah right.

But this is Bush's problem also for not craking down on social welfare and immigration.

Karl Rove said this..? When was that..? I must have missed that quote - and I also missed the announcement that Karl Rove was the leader of the conservative movement and speaks on behalf of us all.

Yeah, other than the fact that Republicans controlled Congress for what...? 10 of the past 12 years..? And have controlled the Presidency for the past 6+ years, and have solidified their control over the Supreme Court since 2000, then the democrats are doing just great..!!

I love how the liberals here are actually gloating over the fact that more people see the government as the provider for poor people. They actually see it as a good thing that people have come to depend on the governement for necessities of daily life - of course the fact that those same people go out and have 7 kids is probably something to be celebrated too.

Hooray for socialism..!! It has worked so well in the past, let's implement it here..!!

Hate to say it guys, it's only going to get worse. The more people that depend on the government for handouts, and the more people you let run accross the border, the worse it's going to get. The welfare state doesn't work. If you look at Europe and their economic condition, inflation, and their fiscal proformers which show a lot of future red ink, you'll see that such a system cannot work long term. The taxpaying public will eventually reach a breaking point and will not be able to support the lazy.

BTW, politics in this country is cyclical. Coke or Pepsi ensures that.
