Father's Day book suggestions, plus Brett Favre, Tom Brady, more - Peter King - SI.com

The thesis seems to be that the Donovan McNabbs of the world are making much more than him this year, so he and his agent are "taking notes." They're doing it quietly, of course, and saying all the right things... maybe because of the signing bonus early in the deal? I dunno, but Brady only gets 5M salary this year, so they're "taking notes."

I can feel the window closing already :D

Discuss, cap guys. Or just Peter King "Huh"ers?

Or, if someone did this before and it's already buried, uh tell me I'm a retard, I'm good with that too. Didn't see it though.

I think it depends on the player and his agent - and the type of contract they signed.

For example we have seen several Drew Rosenhaus clients in recent years negotiate in the court of public opinion about how they are being underpaid, with multiple years left on the contract. The players, such as Plaxico Burress, received most of their money up front as a signing bonus and in early salaries. To me that shows the team has faith in the player; most of the money is guaranteed and they have no reson to cut him late in the contract.

Unfortunately those low latter year contracts have been held against the team by guys like Burress and Ocho Cinco. If I'm an owner I don't sign that kind of a contract with Rosenhaus going forward.

But Brady is not a Rosenhaus client, nor is he a Burress or Señor Cinco. He has no history of contract problems, and Robert Kraft has no history of paying him poorly. He makes plenty on endorsements, and his wife is holding down a steady paycheck too.

Sure his agent may be 'taking notes' to guage Brady's worth, but I wouldn't read anything more in to what King has to say.

well, lets see.....if next yr is an uncapped here, i would imagine that Brady would put his "hometown discount" mentality to the side for a bit, and as well that he should

i would not hold anything against it....the man should have the highest salary in the NFL....

he came back from surgery though, so after he shows his stuff this season, i would imagine a biig extension is coming....

Will Brady get a significant raise on his next contract? It's likely? Am I worried that he won't be a Patriot when it's all said and done? Absolutely not. At the end of the day, I think that a) the Pats will pay what it takes to keep him, and b) he knows that playing for Belichick is the ideal scenario for him.

I'd give him a piece of the team.

I don't think that NFL teams are allowed to do that, because of the salary cap rules.

It'd be fitting, IMO, but I don't see it happening as long as Brady is an active player.

IMHO this is why the astente samual deal and renegoting Wilfork gets messy.

Brady has agreed so far to take less than his market value so that the Patriots could sign players like Moss and Welker. But it was based on the idea that the rest of the team would also play along and his play cut would be spent on getting him more tools on offense.

Brady has lived up to his end of the bargain. BB, Kraft and the rest of the team not always. If Wilfork is able to extort megabucks out of the Patriots before his contract is up, I could see Brady being justified in saying, well I didn't take a pay cut to overpay the defensive line, I took it so you could buy a top flight offensive line. So screw you guys, pay me market value or I will play for someone else that will.

To be fair, let's look at Brady's vs. McNabb's numbers over the past two seasons:

    ATT COMP YDS TD
    589 405 4882 50
    1044 603 7240 42

Sure, Brady threw a lot more touchdowns, but McNabb is well ahead in the other categories -- especially attempts.

Not to mention McNabb is far superior in Superbowls, that is if spewing was a statistical category.

Brady may only be making $5M but he also got a $3M roster bonus and his salaries are low because of the $26M signing bonus he got. His contract was favorable compared to Manning but he got a huge signing bonus (for back then anyway) and $26M can't be ignored when looking at his contract.

He's signed for two more years (upcoming + one more) and we'll see where it goes. We'd all like him to sign a big, but reasonable, 5 year extension but we know he won't sit out looking for a new deal so I expect us to let it play out for a while unless Brady takes, again, a big but reasonable deal.

Peter King might be "taking notes", but his suggestion that Brady and his agent are is pure speculation. Brady doesn't seem like the type to nickel and dime a team - as he didn't do it the first time around, and now he's even more comfortable financially. He's always talking about how lucky he is, I doubt he's the kind of guy who is going to rake the Pats over the coals to make himself the highest paid QB.

Peter King has become a former shell of himself. While he used to be pretty good, he's now content to create stories based on speculation and omission. How can any responsible journalist say that Brady is "only making 5 $Million this year" and not take into consideration the reasons why (his enormous up front payment on the contract is extremely relevant to this story) he is only making $5 million?
    Its just bored, lazy journalism.

    No Jersey Selected

Totally irrelevant to the main point of the thread: heads-up that there is a chance you might hear from some on our board w.r.t using the term 'retard'.

His wife makes 35 million a year. I hardly doubt he cares.
