A couple of picks already this year are perceived reaches, so people are looking back at BB's history of reaches.

Edit: To more observers than I had realized, Harmon is the only major reach.

The ones who I've seen mentioned the most are Mankins, obviously a success, and Tavon Wilson, IMO too early to judge.

Other obvious ones are Vollmer, a 4th round kicker, and a 5th round punter; I'd say all three of those were successes too.

I vaguely remember Deion was reach back in the day, but I'm not really sure.
I don't think Seymour was, the famed Borges rant notwithstanding.

I don't count little things like Kyle Wilson being put one slot above McCourty on most rankings.

So who are the perceived reaches I'm forgetting? When did BB's WTF picks live down to consensus expectations?

    Taylor Price, perhaps?

Maroney was IMO a reach. Mostly everyone had DeAngelo Williams rated higher than him.

Cunningham was another reach. He had a 3rd-4th round grade. Was rated significantly lower than his team mate Carlos Dunlap, but BB still drafted him. It hasn't turned out well.

Wheatley was a slight reach as well. Huge injury concerns in college.

Don't bother people do not want to acknowledge that when you reach usually the guys aren't very good. Belichick has hit on some he's missed on tons of others.

I'd say Ridley is a reach that has worked out just fine.

Brace was thought of as a 2nd round pick. Not sure why you consider him a reach.

Depending on what site you looked at, Cunningham had a rating of a late 2nd early 3rd to a late 3rd early 4th.

Dunlap, on the other hand, had a rating from a late 1st to a late 2nd/early third. Again, depending on what site you looked at.

How could Maroney have been a reach when Williams, Maroney, Addai were rated 1/2/3 by most people that year. And it did vary?

No. People like you think that everyone is a reach and that Belichick just stinks. It's too bad that you're wrong and have been proven to be so.

Depending on the site, Chad Jackson was rated either the #1 or #2 WR in that draft. The other wide receiver was Santonio Holmes.

There is a difference between a reach and bust.

Yeah and and when he did 95% of this board was screaming like a little kid on Christmas. People loved the pick and it didn't work out. Somehow people also conveniently made it sound like they were never on board with the pick and pulled a double back on it to cover their tracks and now use it as fodder years later. You know who you are.

    Thanks!

I'd strike Bethel. If the Pats traded up and weren't COMPLETELY mistaken, then they weren't alone in having him rated that high.

How do we know what a "reach " is? Because Kiper and other draft guru's say so.

Look I spend as much time and money on the draft as most people. I have my favorites as I go through the draft process. But I do have the prospective that in spite of the time spent by me on the draft, I should know 10% of what the professionals know. If I know as much as they do, then they should be fired and I should be hired.

If the Patriots "reach" for a player that tells me that other teams have done their homework and are about ready to select that player in the real world. If BB knows that he can pick a player in the 7th because no other team has shown interest, why would he pay that player 3rd round money?

If our draft guides and internet draft sites are the gospel, then teams should save a whole lot of money and get rid of their scouting departments and use the draft guides to draft players.

People here comment all the time as to how cheap the Patriots are. Sorry, you can't have it both ways.

Oh wait, this is a message board I guess you can have it both ways. :D

I'm not sure Dowling goes on this list, he did have some injury concerns that knocked him out of the first round but that's still high perceived value. Also, Slater went in the fifth round so that's not too reachy. You might call Ben Watson and Dan Graham reaches too, they were first round TE, but BB was a TE in college and TE are multiple down players too and we know how the team values them.

Jerod Mayo was a reach. He was a late first or second projection. The pats traded back from 7 but could only go to 10 and took him. Most said they could have gone back to 30-40 and still gotten him.

Nate Ebner and Matt Cassel were reaches, but in day three.

Although we traded up for him, Ty Warren was a reach that no one had expected to go in round one.

Maroney wasn't a reach. He was universally believed to be a first round pick and either the first or second RB to be selected in that draft. Clearly not a reach.

BTW, it is getting a little tiring of the Cunningham and Dunlap comparisons. Neither are particularly good players. Yes, Dunlap is better, but it doesn't mean he is any good.
