Vote on Health Bill Today Caps a Journey Back From the Brink - NYTimes.com

    Stephen Crowley/The New York Times

NANCY PELOSI, JAN. 28 “We will go through the gate. If the gate is closed, we will go over the fence. If the fence is too high, we will pole vault in. If that doesn’t work, we will parachute in. But we are going to get health care reform passed.”

(After Scott Brown got elected, Rahm Emmanuel suggested scaling back health care reform and Obama was open to the idea, but Pelosi stood firm.)

“Kiddie care,” she called the scaled-down plan, derisively, in private.

In a series of impassioned conversations, over the telephone and in the Oval Office, she conveyed her frustration to the president, according to four people familiar with the talks. If she and Harry Reid, the Senate Democratic leader, were going to stick out their necks for Mr. Obama’s top legislative priority, Ms. Pelosi wanted assurances that the president would too.

Obama's Presidency has been defined by Reid and Pelosi ... not the other way around. This has been very apparent from the beginning. I wouldn't say he's a manchurian like Bush ... but he certainly is the mantle piece since being elected.

On the world stage he has not gained anything ... domestically it's been all Pelosi/Congress with some help from Reid/Senate. Pelosi and our military have been running the country since Bush has gone to pasture.

It's been her show entirely since January...her wheeling and dealings, her threats and bargains, her pleading and begging.

He has been impotent since January. She runs the show.

    It's ok, guys, I understand.

Strong intelligent women who can actually focus, carry thorough and accomplish things are alot scarier than women who wink, twitch and quit, aren't they?

I have no idea what you guys have against Pelosi, but she certainly seems to be a lightning rod hereabouts. As the Mrs. references, maybe she should really pretend to go huntin' and fishin' and the like, and stop legislatin' and bein' Speaker of the House...

Comical what passes for politics here. Yanno what? Her district like her just fine, and she doesn't show any signs of quittin' to go on a book tour, get a network deal, or be a professional facebooker.

By the looks of the collective hatred for America occasioned by the success of the health care bill (and in a couple hours, the health care LAW,) she is responsible for a great accomplishment in American politics.

Cry, whine, post doctored photos, be big fat babies, it doesn't much matter. I had no great positive feelings toward Pelosi prior to this weekend, other than the feeling that if she pushes the buttons of our local mouth-breathers, she can't be that bad.

This story, and the coverage of the bill, makes her look singularly capable as Speaker, and a woman of substance - in short, someone to be admired.

This is what's meant by coming through on a national stage. Contrary to Republican belief, a woman can perform on one without being in a swimsuit wearing heels.

It's nothing to do with gender. It's all to do with the fact that she's a nutso liberal. Harry Reid's polling even worse so you're just assuming injustice that doesn't exist.
