The peasant mentality lives on in America | Taibblog

    Matt Taibbi

It took a good long while for news of the Teabag movement to penetrate the periphery of my consciousness — I kept hearing things about it and dismissing them, sure that the whole business was some kind of joke. Like a Daily Show invention, say. It pains me to say this as an American, but we are the only people on earth dumb enough to use a nationwide campaign of “teabag parties” as a form of mass protest, in the middle of a real economic crisis.

What’s next? The Great Dirty Sanchez-In of 2010? A Million Man Felch? (Insert Rusty Trombone joke here).

    Uggg...READ IT.

its not really about the "Tea-Bagging" that conservatives are doing with one another (hahaha its still funny) . Its about the mentality that the peasants don't hate the people who made them peasants, they hate the workers...or the police etc...

interesting perspective from a great writer.

Haven't read it, but from your description -- and Daily Show reference -- the "tea-baggers" are PO'd about creeping left-wing socialism. What else???

The REAL story of the Boston Tea Party goes like this. In the 1700's your average citizen was a farmer that grew or raised evreything they needed to survive. If they needed shoes or glass for windows they bartered for it. Food for shoes etc. they didn't pay taxes, the merchants did. The merchants aka buisness men did get tired of paying taxes to the Crown for Englands military adventures. So they dressed up as as indians as everyone knows. But what the average citizen doesn't know is that it was the wealthy merchant class behind the tea party not the average citizen because again they didn't pay taxes. And 244 years later its the same thing. The wealthy not wanting to pay taxes so they finance these astro turf tea parties. I have no problem with who goes to them. But most are getting played.

Taibbi is a local tv hack wannabee. As to who made them peasants, well many of 'them' don't feel like peasants and what they don't want is to be salves on the liberal plantation answering to their liberal massas

Its actually funny what is happening on this thread.

the article is an opionion piece on whats goingon with the conservative movement. A kind of bait and switch, but with directed anger.

Then we have posters who have not read the article, yet are deflecting the subject to a debate on the credibility of the author. A bait and switch....

    Its ironic.

As a far left liberal what insight does Taibbi have. He probably hadn't even seen R Santelli's rant on you tube that spawned this protest.

As a far right wing conservative what insight do you have? As a corporate stool-pigeon what insight does Santelli have?

    In the first 2 paragraphs:

Geez how clueless can you possible be about conservatives, the conservatives were enraged by the bailouts. They wanted to let the banks fail. The conservatives in the republican caucus are the ones who voted against the bailout when Bush proposed it. What the hell is Taibbi talking about.

DO you think he is even aware that Wall St game far more to BO than to McPain?
