PatsPicker Roster Tool Up and Running

Here's my stab at an early 53. The one main area that tripped me up a bit was ILB. I also could see a guy like Grissom seeing snaps at DT, as well as DE.

I would be disappointed if we didn't keep both Stork/Andrews, so I have 10 OL. Under the current circumstances, I find that to be reasonable. Dobson is a bit of a surprise as the 5th WR, but I took a shot with him there.

It looks like I am missing Matthew Slater, so I'd probably have to go back and remove one of the 10 OL (after the first 4 games, assuming that Brady serves his suspension and does not count against the roster total).

Of course there will be unforeseen injuries and the distinct possibility of some players beginning the season on PUP, but here goes nothing with a way too early guess.

Offense:
QB (3) T.Brady, J.Garoppolo, J.Brissett
RB (5) D.Lewis, L.Blount, B.Bolden, J.Develin, J.White
WR (5) J.Edelman, D.Amendola, C.Hogan, K.Martin, M.Mitchell
TE (3) R.Gronkowski, M.Bennett, C.Harbor

C (1) B.Stork
G (4) J.Thuney, S.Mason, J.Cooper, T.Jackson
T (4) N.Solder, S.Vollmer, L.Waddle, C.Fleming

Defense:
DE (4) R.Ninkovich, J.Sheard, C.Long, T.Flowers
DT (4) M.Brown, A.Branch, T.Knighton, V.Valentine

ILB (2) D.Hightower, E.Roberts
OLB (4) J.Collins, S.McClellin, J.Freeny, K.Grugier-Hill

CB (5) M.Butler, L.Ryan, C.Jones, D.Roberts, E.Biggers
SS (3) P.Chung, N.Ebner, B.King
FS (2) D.McCourty, D.Harmon

Special Teams:
ST (4) S.Gostkowski, R.Allen, J.Cardona, M.Slater

I ultimately decided to keep Ebner off of mine, even though I know they renewed his contract. I also was tempted to put Dobson on my final 53 simply because I'm getting an eerie feeling that Edelman may not be ready to start the season. I'm thinking he may get IR-designated to return. I accidentally left Kline on mine, but his name does not look out of place to me. And oh, although I added Blount, he is no guarantee to me at all.

OFFENSE:

QB (3) T.Brady, J.Garoppolo, J.Brissett
RB (4) D.Lewis, L.Blount, B.Bolden, J.White
WR (6) J.Edelman, D.Amendola, C.Hogan, M.Mitchell, K.Martin, M.Slater
TE (3) R.Gronkowski, M.Bennett, C.Harbor
C (2) B.Stork, D.Andrews
G (4) S.Mason, T.Jackson, J.Thuney, J.Kline
T (4) N.Solder, S.Vollmer, M.Cannon, C.Fleming

DEFENSE:

I'm not crazy about the idea of letting Andrews go, although I suppose we've seen quality backup centers come and go plenty of times (Nick McDonald comes to mind).

I'd like to see more of Coleman at CB, personally.

Foster unless he implodes in TC, will be on the roster.

I think NE keeps both Stork and Andrews. Stork showed he could play the G position last season. He was not great or lights out, but he was adequate. I just don't see BB letting Andrews walk out the door. He played extremely well in his time as the starter last season sans a few mental errors each game. I don't think BB and Co. will let that offensive line look anything like it did for the majority of last season, and especially in the AFCCG.

Yeah, I actually had him as the last RB on my projection up top as well, Viper.

It will be interesting to see if they'd consider choosing him over some of the other options, or if they simply decide to go without Devlin. I think the RB options are adequate, but not great. Ultimately, I think it could rival OL as "the" positional battle of camp.

I have a weird feeling that Develin can be one of this year's surprise cuts. I don't know why I keep getting that feeling, but I just do . . . especially if another veteran RB is signed. But heck, maybe (and hopefully) I'm wrong. I know NE likes the lead back in the run game.

I had both Andrews and Stork on the roster until the last moment. At the last moment I went with versatility of a backup center who can play elsewhere (Thuney), though that's a bit of a stretch at this point. Before that I had Andrews on the roster over Tre' Jackson; I probably should have left it at that.

Foster is another player I had trouble keeping off the roster. I could see him making the 53 over White, for example. Another possibility is Tyler Gaffney (or Donald Brown) over Blount, though Gaffney's history of injuries makes that unlikely.

Belichick has gone without a true fullback before, so that would not be a surprise. The running game went south without Develin, and though it did not improve with Joey Iosefa there were other bigger issues than FB. Would BB be content to input Harbor when needed as an H-Back, and forego a fullback in order to use that roster spot elsewhere? That would not be surprising in the least.

Besides the interior OL, WR was another position I struggled with. It really comes down to who does and does not pick up the concept. It would be nice if Nate Washington could do so, if for no other reason than to give the club a taller deep threat to compliment the quick, shifty (but shorter) receivers and mid-area tight ends.

The easiest decision may have been leaving Cannon of the 53.
