Pats vs. Jets game wasn't as bad as everyone thinks

Re: Pats vs Jets game wasn't as bad as everyone thinks

I'm not trying to take sides, but to use '07 stats as proof that the team is committed to the run makes no sense. Did you watch them that season? The passed, passed, and passed some more. Then when they got up by 5 TDs, they'd run the ball (but even then, they would often pass, and we'd here how our beloved team was always running up the score). 43% rushing the ball is not a committment to the run, especially when so much of their runs were after-thoughts later in the game.

That this record setting, high powered, seemingly always on the field '07 offense was 9th in rushing attempts doesn't mean they were balanced. They were 1st in points, yards, first downs, yards passing, passing TDs, and number of yards per pass attempt. They were a passing team. Brady set the all time record for TD PASSES. Moss set the all time record for TD RECEPTIONS.

A team that goes so often with the empty backfield, and zero running backs, is not a team committed to the run, no matter how to try to slice and dice the stats.

A commitment generally implies a willingness to stick with something. We're currently 26th in the NFL at 78 YPG rushing, after being very successful last year. We're running around 70+% passing plays. And, most importantly, in the last 2 games in the 4th quarter we have run 18 pass plays to 2 rushes against Buffalo, and 15 pass plays to 1 rush against the Jets. That's not balance, and not a commitment to the run. It won't fool anyone. It won't keep the pass rush off Brady. And it won't win a lot of games.

Remember 2004 when Corey Dillon would wear opposing defenses down and then break them in the 4th quarter?

The only reason I can think of for 50 passes a game is that Brady / BB want as many reps as possible in game conditions to speed up his rehab.

Belichick has said many times that he prefers a balanced offense, and it usually is pretty balanced, when the stats are added up at the end of the year.

Brady's biggest problem Sunday, was Edelman and Galloway, lined up wrong , or running the wrong routes. Moss had to motion them around a bunch of times.

Also, the Jets constantly changing the mike linebacker , caused many audibles at the line, which were the major cause of the delay of game penalties.

Of course, once they get behind, it's always pass first, as it is with most teams.

We'll see plenty of runs this year, it's early yet. By the end of the year it'll be 55% pass to 45% run, as usual.

There doesn't have to a reason by Belichick for everything that happens. How about it's as simple as O'Brien called the plays that way, because he thought it was the best way to win by having his QB throw a ton?

Next you'll be trying to claim it was Belichick who specifically wanted to only blitz Sanchez a total of three times all game, when it was more likely Pees' decision.

No need to give Belichick too much blame or credit for every single thing that happens.

Very well said indeed.
