I'm not here making excuses just putting my two cents worth about the game. I was watching this game at a sports bar in Miami Beach along with several other Pats fans including several Colts players (They had the Monday night game). Everyone is now talking about how good the Jets defense is and how they dominated the game. I disagree.

Look at the stats. New England gained 299 total yards. Jets gained 254 yards. New England held the ball over 30 min compared to 29 for the Jets. Both had one turnover. Both were inside the red zone 3 times. Looking at those stats, the Pats had the better D. They held the Jets out of the endzone the entire first half.

Now here is what made the difference.. Brady did not look good at all. Thats not just my observation but I overheard the some Colts players sitting at a table behind me saying the same thing. Brady had a wide open Edelman for a sure TD. Edelman ran a cut route on the 2 yard line and Brady threw it too far in front of him. Had that been a good throw, Edelman would have scored untouched. Brady also waited too long on that Galloway TD throw. Brady also had alot of erratic throws throughout the game.

Finally, when we were in field goal range, Brady committed not one, but back to back delay of game penalties. That pushed us out of field goal range.

The Jets played well and deserved to win, but no way did they dominate this game. I for one am 100% confident that Brady will be in 07 form by the next time we play the Jets and I can almost guarantee that we will beat them by a large and convincing margin. I cant wait til Nov.

I agree. Hard to admit that Brady was the problem but it's true. Now whether or not the OL should share some of that responsibility is for another debate.

The OL should shoulder some of the blame. I am not upset with the loss because we could have won. I was just merely pointing out the the Jets didn't dominate this game the way the media and Jets fans suggests

Re: Pats vs Jets game wasn't as bad as everyone thinks

No Welker, no Mayo.....that's a huge difference. I don't most have said it was bad but the playcalling left a lot to be desired. No blitzes against a rookie and they didn't stick with the run game so there was no balance and they were predictable.

The offense had many chances to pull away but Brady is rusty and was off target especially on the Edleman easy walk in TD and to Galloway for a first down inside the 4.

They will get better and as we know it's all about which team is hot going into the playoffs.

No, the game itself wasn't terrible at all. I think the only problems here is that:

    1. It's a division loss that plays a huge role in tiebreakers if it comes down to that.
    2. It's probably a team we should beat with 2 very tough opponents coming up and now a real chance at 1-3.
    3. After all the trash talking the Jets players and coach did the whole week, you'd expect more fire, especially from our leader who had a very poor game.

IMO it wasn't bad, but bad enough. That being said, it's just one loss and we live to see another day.

    too many....plays written on player's wrist.........."jeopardy" cardboard signs..........rushed,no-huddle plays....
pre-snap reads.........and all-around,cluster-fu-k chess moves, overloading the neurons of the players.

Re: Pats vs Jets game wasn't as bad as everyone thinks

    The difference is that:

    - We couldn't score TD's in the red zone
    - We only blitzed a rookie QB a total of 3 times (meaning, more than 4 rushers)
    - We went completely away from the run even though we were dominating on the ground

We'll still be major factors in the playoffs, but the team is far from a finished product in terms of execution or play calling right now.

Like the original poster said, they had chances, but just couldn't cash in. I think the offense will find a rhythm soon enough and they'll be fine. Both games so far have had a couple of drives that sputtered out in enemy territory that normally would have been scores.

I agree red zone production is the most major issue I saw. That pass to Edelman was a sure TD and that one really, really hurt. The back to back penalties were awful as well. I've never seen him do something like that.

It's Brady. If Brady can get back to feeling comfortable in the pocket, making the correct reads, and making good throws, this team will be dominant. If he can't, then the running game will have to step up.

Re: Pats vs Jets game wasn't as bad as everyone thinks

To a degree I agree with you.

However, it's not all about blaming it on execution or rust or inexperience.

The opposing teams have picked up on our tendencies. They KNOW we aren't really committed to the run. They KNOW that we use shot gun almost 3/5 of the time, and that we almost always pass in that formation.

    Well said. I would add:

    4. The second half defense was borderline horrendous which fosters concern for the future.

Penalties hurt more than is given credit. Holding, procedure, delay of game all seem to happen at critical times. Not blaming the refs at all because they were mostly good calls ( except for the one on Baker).

The D gave up only 16 points and the Jets TD was a result of poor ST's giving up great field position and poor tackeling on one play.

But the killer was red zone offense. Had we scored 2 TD in the first half that we should we would not be talking about the other things. And it was TFB who did not make the throws in the red zone when he had the receivers and very little pressure.

Tom will bounce back. 12-4 looks good right now.:D

Well remember, the Jets did win the Superbowl Week 2 version.

All kidding aside, we did do well on the game and held their loud mouth antics to only 16 points.

We will bounce back and be fine.

Re: Pats vs Jets game wasn't as bad as everyone thinks

This is simply wrong. How can you say this team doesn't "commit" to the run when in '07 we ran 43% of the time for 4.1 Y/A for a total for 1849 yards? We were 9th in the league for run attempts, 13th for total yards, 5th for rushing TDs, and 14th for Y/A. For a team that had the best passing game in the history of the game, that is what I would call a "commitment" to the run with fairly good results.

Last year, you can't even make that argument. In '08, with Cassel behind center, we ran just under 50% of the time for 4.4 Y/A and a total of 2278 yards. We were 4th in the league for attempts, 6th in the league for total Yards, 4th in rushing TD, and 7th for Y/A. That sounds like a pretty good commitment to the run with great success.

Seriously, were does this stupid notion come from that we "don't want" to run the ball or that "we can't" run the ball. It's false. Of course some games we focus on passing vs some games we focus on running, it's called game strategy. You run on the teams with weak run defense and pass on the teams with weak pass defense.

It's like people want the running game to be as good as the passing game. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE! There is no way a team can have a prolific running game and passing game. Most teams don't even have one that is prolific.

The team looked pretty good to me.

Tom and the WRs were rusty, the defense had one unfortunate drive against them...

Running game was good. I can still hear Taylor's pads crunching as he ran into one Jet defender and then the next.

We easily would have beat them if Tom was on his game. Or Randy makes the catch or Galloway....or if Welker was in the game.

Re: Pats vs Jets game wasn't as bad as everyone thinks

After 2 games our defense has given up 10 and 16 pts respectively ... WITHOUT Mayo. Everyone was moaning about losing Seymour, but his loss has not been that great. I'll admit that they could have used the push that Seymour gave on the pass rush, but they shut down the Jets running game in the 1st half without him.

You make an excellent point about little mistakes ... Wilhite failed to wrap up Cotchery on that big pass play!

Brady will come around and the rest of the league better take advantage of his slow start because he and Moss are getting pretty angry ...

Thats not true at all. The TD drive came off a huge return and at the end of the game I believe they came up with 3 stops to give this offense a chance to win it and the O didn't come thru. In between there were a few drives but nothing that ended in TDs so what was horrendous????

STs, and Penalties lost this game even with Brady having a tough game though he could have won despite that if he was on.

Re: Pats vs Jets game wasn't as bad as everyone thinks

I'm not trying to take sides, but to use '07 stats as proof that the team is committed to the run makes no sense. Did you watch them that season? The passed, passed, and passed some more. Then when they got up by 5 TDs, they'd run the ball (but even then, they would often pass, and we'd here how our beloved team was always running up the score). 43% rushing the ball is not a committment to the run, especially when so much of their runs were after-thoughts later in the game.

That this record setting, high powered, seemingly always on the field '07 offense was 9th in rushing attempts doesn't mean they were balanced. They were 1st in points, yards, first downs, yards passing, passing TDs, and number of yards per pass attempt. They were a passing team. Brady set the all time record for TD PASSES. Moss set the all time record for TD RECEPTIONS.

A team that goes so often with the empty backfield, and zero running backs, is not a team committed to the run, no matter how to try to slice and dice the stats.
