Re: Pats trade Hochstein to Broncos for late-round draft pick [merged]

I believe that Miguel is accounting for the Kaczur deal as about $600K in additional 2009 charges. I believe that it depends upon the date of the bonus - 2009 or 2010 - which is not clear.

Plus, I can not see how the deal is compliant with the 30% rule if the option bonus is due in 2010.

Re: Pats trade Hochstein to Broncos for late-round draft pick [merged]

To be fair, the chances of a 7th round pick being as good as Hochstein, let alone making the Patriots team, is pretty low.

About all a 7th round draft pick is good for is to move up a couple

spots in a draft day trade or to level out the value in a trade. The

Patriots are probably going to get more 7th round picks as compensatory

picks.

You're right on the comp picks part, but . . .

Brady was the end of the 6th. Givens was in the 7th. Cassell was in the 7th. TBC was 6th or 7th. Edelman? Wasnt he 7th?
We have a history of a UDFA making the roster almost every year, so that extra 7th could give us the chance to find that guy and have the rights to him instead of going somewhere else (overall I think its something like 50 a year UDFAs on average make teams).
I'd rather have the 7th than the comp we would have gotten when we cut him at the end of camp.

You don't get a comp pick for a player unless he becomes a FA on the first day of FA that year.

Russ was a gamer and a very versatile player. It feels weird to see him go.

Re: Pats trade Hochstein to Broncos for late-round draft pick [merged]

I think this is a significant loss. You can never have TOO much depth on the offensive line. Hochstein was a very solid and versatile player for the Pats. I am a bit baffled by this move.

Re: Pats trade Hochstein to Broncos for late-round draft pick [merged]

This is a significant loss from the 2007 or even 2008 version of Hochstein where Hochstein could be counted on to be the backup center and guard on Game Day, and also play fullback.

Apparently his guard play declined some and Belichick decided that he just wasn't worth a roster spot. Belichick must think that Connolly or Wendell or Yates or someone off the streets will be better than the 2009 version of Hochstein that Dante has eveluated in camp, practice and the preseason games.

My guess is that Belichick is ready to graduate someone from Dante's Camp For Wayward Linemen.

Acccording to the Denver Post, the Pats just got back their own 7th rd pick that they sent to Denver in the LeKevin deal.

So, Hochstein and Smith for a 5th round pick....?

Re: Pats trade Hochstein to Broncos for late-round draft pick [merged]

In the end, we got Burgess for a 3rd and Hochstein and Smith.

No, Burgess is a separate team, and there's a big time difference. I can't include that transaction. But, obviously, you can. So, we differ yet again.

Ahh... the spice of message boards.

Put that way, he better produce Friday or I might have to start a he's-not-worth-it-let's-cut-him club like the anit-Maroney mob. Now, who can I champion as a pass-rushing binky? Hmm, maybe Ninkovich will get a couple of freebies against the 3rd string. (Too bad the Crab man is hurt, or I could really start a club.)

Separate team, separate deal...but directly involved in the latter two trades

Oakland got the 5th for Burgess from the Patriots deal with Denver for Smith, Patriots got the 7th that they sent to Denver for the Smith trade, Denver gets Smith and Hochstein.

So after all is said and done, they traded away two players plus a 3rd and 5th for Burgess.

We discussed earlier that this can be viewed positively for Wendell.

Hochstein was the back-up long-snapper.

Also note that Ninkovich is a long-snapper. In comparing Alexander and Ninkovich as marginal back-up LB's and very good ST leaders, Ninkovich has a big edge due to his long-snapping ability.

Nope, you're counting the 5th twice. The two players are the 5th.

The net, as mgteich said:

LOST: 3rd, L. Smith, Hochstein

GAINED: Burgess

Should have checked my math again it's just like the 7th traded to Denver...no wonder I kept getting "B"s in class :(
