Patriots trade 7th overall to Saints

Just announced.

Re: Patriots trade 7, 164 to Saints for 10, 78

Pleasant surprise -- that's pretty much in line with the trade value chart.

By the same chart, bundling three of the next four picks could get us back up to around where our confiscated pick was, if that's what it takes to get a good CB prospect (or whatever you see as the big remaining need position a rookie could actually fill).

Do they have enough ammo now to go after Cliff Avril, the OLB from Purdue?

Swapping firsts to trade in a late fifth round pick for a mid third seems decent as long as they had Keith Rivers and Jerod Mayo graded equally.

I would be surprised if Rivers was even close to Mayo.

Actually I don't think it was.

By my math, #7 and #10 are 200 points apart.

The Patriots picked up 200 points exactly by getting #78.

Under the old/current chart that would have been enough.

But don't forget they gave up a 5th rounder - which is another 25 points - which I think is fair given the fact that the Patriots had a high (salary) incentive to trade down at that point and the Pats also knew that they had limited trading partners as while Ellis' stock was going up recently, it wasn't anything like it would have been should Ryan or McFadden have been there.
