"The automatic spreading of option bonuses due in 2006 over the next 5 years instead of 4 (for those players who will have 5+ years left on their contracts after the options are exercised)"

While they were talking about the Redskins, this also applies to Brady's contract. This means that his $12 million option bonus which has been prorated over 4 years ($3 million a year) will now be prorated over 5 years ($2.4 million).

Miguel's 'trick' recipe...

1. Knows how to set up a spreadsheet
2. Studies the many NFL rules so his spreadsheet reflects them accurately

and the hardest part...

3. Peruses myriad sources of arcane info on the $ details of player deals

Oh, and did I forget the constant hard work but labor of love part?

Now that the dreaded 30% Rule has ridden off into the sunset, the Pats will also convert $3 million or thereabouts of Brady's salary into signinging bonus. This will get prorated over five years, saving the Pats about $2.4 million on the cap this year.

The declining cap hits for Brady after this year make it abundantly obvious that this would be their intention once the 30% rule was gone. It helps them in the final year of proration from Brady's old contract.

Miguel is a man amongst boys, no doubt (serious comment, no sarcasm intended).
