Martin signs 'future' deal

The Patriots signed former Virginia Tech offensive lineman Jimmy Martin to a "future" contract.

Martin was a seventh-round draft choice of the San Diego Chargers in 2006 and has not played in a regular-season NFL game. He has most recently spent time on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad, and also played this past spring in NFL Europa with the Rhein Fire. He has experience at all three positions on the line.

The 6-4, 303-pound Martin will join the Patriots after the 2007 season is completed.

His beard has tremendous upside. While it may take a season or two to develop into its full potential, I can see it competing with the other starting linemen soon. I just hope we don't get those "that beard is made of glass" comments too soon.

A nice pickup..this is teh time of the year for a half dozen players to be sihned got next year..young players who are wishing to make it in time....Martin seems lik a versatile OL..perfect for Dante's OL school....maybe a RB>> a LB??? next ones?? Pats always trying to better themselves...

If that's the case, Belichick should have drafted Doug Datish in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft rather than Clint Oldenburg.

Considering the Jets traded practically every pick to move up twice in the 2007 NFL Draft .........

Oldenburg has potential ... it's going to take him a few years.
I wish we had kept him because he has RT/TE potential.

Meanwhile Doug Datish played three different positions on the offensive line while at Ohio State.

Or, if the FO was looking for a possible LT of the future, it should have drafted Adam Koets, of the NY Football Giants.

Oldenburg, like everyone else drafted by the NEP on the second day, would have been available with its second 7th-round pick, or as UDFAs.

I hope that some LBs and RBs are also signed to futures contracts. Heck, we could use a couple of them right now.
