Sort of underwhelming signing, but heck, what do I know...

I'm hoping Pats sign Ellis..

Just to see the JI board IMPLODE :D

With Vince and AH eating up blockers.Eric Moore and Mike Wright will be scary good coming from the left side. They've both got the "motor".....just turn 'em loose.:rocker:

Well said.

Though I still think we could sign Ellis for DL depth. This was more about that subrusher 43end/34OLB we need. I wouldn't be shocked to see him make the team. He's been effective as a situational guy it seems. 4.5 sacks in 11 games with the Texans last year is better than the production we got out of our pass rushers.

Also 5 QB Hits and 17 Hurries with 2 Passed defended in 2010.

not expecting him to make the team
Wouldn't be so quick to assume that. From what I've read, he's still a good pass rusher, but has become more of a specialist. Apparently played pretty well for the Texans last year. Worth a shot.

The Pats brought in Ellis for a workout and visit. That means there's absolutely no chance he will be signed.

Looks like the Pats got a player who has some upside, and should compete for a roster spot. Typical low-risk move by the Pats. If he doesn't pan out, nothing wrong with the Pats cutting him. If he works out (maybe ala Vrabel?) all the better.

In Bill I trust, but I'm amazed to learn that anyone on the Texans defense played pretty well last year. Didn't they give up over 300 yards passing to Tim Tebow, of all people?

I don't know why he wore out his welcome with the Bears and Texans. Wade Phillips is installing a one gap 3-4 and didn't keep him, while the Bears are a 4-3 team. I know the Texans were over CAP, but cutting him didn't save much.

I like the 17 hurries and especially the high number of Pass Defended. I wonder if it was pass coverage, or tipped passes, but it doesn't really matter does it?

I wish Marlon the best, but he was a street FA, the Pats were forced to picked up as they were going into the Playoffs, when Wilfork was the only remaining healthy Defensive Lineman.

Welcome aboard Pass Rush Specialist. :p

This excited me as much as when we signed that specialist from Pittsburgh a few years ago that nobody new about, I think his name was something like Mark Varbel? Frable? I forget.

anyway....welcome to the Matrix Mr Anderson!

...and this is the opening foray into free agency!

Also interesting, if the Pats were planning a switch to a 4-3 system, their attention to bringing in candidates to play 4-3 DE include 6th round unknown Markell Carter, unheralded five-starts-in-four-years free agent Mark Anderson, and five undrafted free agents. That's one pasta-coated wall.

At the same time, their #1 overall offense gained six draft picks in the first five rounds and a trade for Chad Ochocinco.

It's an interesting reclamation project for the Pats. This guy had 12 sacks as a rookie for the chicago bears. That's at the PRO level, not college. But Anderson's production slipped to the 4-5 sack per season rate afterwards. Still that's pretty decent. He has the potential to return to his old production if used the right way? I think BB can make this guy look good. Look what he did with Mike Vrabel.

he tests well... let us hope we found a situational guy that can rush the passer. Speed BURNS you can't coach it or coach against it. This guy could crack roster. Let us see if he has the Tom Brady heart; the relentless trial of proving people wrong that have doubts:)

Sneaky BB at it again. BB's misdirection is everlasting:)

4-5 sacks per season is our top rushers average most years. I think everyone on our team who rushes should improve by at least 1 sack with the addition of Haynesworth causing problems right next to Wilfork. I think seeing a ~8-10 sack increase through the whole unit would be rather nice. It would be about a 25% increase in production.

...are the Jets fans freaking out yet?

This is great and all but .... can he rush the passer?

ahh, couldn't resist that. :singing:

He's certainly no Vernon Ghoulston but he does what he can.

I like it. One of those extremely low risk guys with a very high ceiling. 12 sacks as a rookie is certainly nothing to sneeze at. It's the best since those freaks Peppers and Freeney stormed the scene. Really excellent athlete, good length... tested really well at the combine. His times in the shuttle and 3-cone drill were quite good, right around what you would hope for as far as change of direction in an OLB. His vertical and broad jumps were ridiculous.

It's certainly disconcerting how much he tailed off the past few years. Still, another guy who can get 5+ sacks may be all this team really needs so long as Cunningham or Moore can get similar production.
