A ballpark figure on the numbers for Patriots S Steve Gregory: I hear $2-3M average per year over three years.

Good special teams player. Played some WR in college.

    Don't think he's being looked at on defense. PFF ranks him significantly lower than any Patriots CB or S that played on the team last season;

Averaged 0.66 Int's per year and 0.33 sacks per year over his 6 year career. Amazingly, has never forced a fumble in his 6 NFL years.

Won't turn 30 until the end of next season.

Was suspended 4 games in 2010 for steroid use.

For over 2m a year, he better be playing defense.

Yep, posted in other thread, with that contract he might be our starting FS. He was a backup to a very good safety (Weddle), betterthan Ihedigbo, who knows.

@MikeReiss - S. Gregory is great signing by Pats. He is athletic, smart & versatile - Can contribute at safety, nickel & on special teams.

Agreed, but we should wait to see how much of the money is guaranteed before we worry about it too much.

Gregory is a free safety. There aren't many available.

Our current safeties are: Chung and Barrett.

We also have STer Sergio Brown.

I think that we will still look for more safeties, including Landry this weekend.

    The Patriots obviously didn't.

Who do you trust? Some random British guy who has been in IT his whole life and decided to turn his hobby into a paid website, or the Patriots scouting department and Bill Belichick?

If he's making 2-3 million a year, he's starting or playing very prominently in the sub defenses. Only 9 players on the team last year had a cap hit over 3 million. Maybe some of the deal is funny money, but he's not just an STer at anything over 1.5 million.

Ok so now the Globe runs the team.

He is going to compete for a starting spot @ FS and play a ton. In addition to FS, he is going to contribute on nickel and special teams. So in summary, he's a good football player.

100% agree. Most likely a small signing bonus with a small first year salary. If he doesn't make the team out of camp the damage will be negligible.

Scout Inc's write up on him makes him seem like really good fit for the Pats' defense:

Its a little early to give up on the season just yet. I expect the Pats to draft a starting safety in the first or second round to start next to Chung. I also think you will see another safety added either during F/A or during the cut down period to provide competition for Diggs, Slater, McCourty, Gregory & maybe Sterling Moore at the safety spots.

Well it's clear that they are targeting mostly defense in free agency and they should.
