...Justin Beaver, Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Obviously small school...and some here will say BB doesn't go small. Fact is -- Pats are scouting him. If he shows up as a 7th-rounder or undrafted -- we now know who he is.

Whitewater back dazzles at pro day

Excerpts...

Ever since I was a little kid I dreamed about playing in the NFL." That dream, admittedly still a long shot, grew surprisingly closer to reality Wednesday when the gifted tailback fashioned an impressive workout for NFL scouts who attended the University of Wisconsin's pro timing day at the McClain Center.

Beaver, who last fall was named the Division III player of the year and led Whitewater to its first national title, was among a handful of Division III players who tested for the scouts after UW's players finished.
The Palmyra native put together the best all-around performance of all the players and spoke at length with scouts from the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots.

Officials from both teams told Beaver they expected delivery of any pertinent film sometime today, a message Beaver relayed to one of his agents.

Beaver was measured at 5-foot-8 and 192 pounds.

His best time in the 40-yard dash was 4.41 seconds. That would have put him among the top 10 running backs who performed at the NFL Scouting Combine last month in Indianapolis.

His time in the 20-yard shuttle was 3.96 seconds, better than any of the backs at the combine.

His time in the three-cone drill was 6.72 seconds, which would have put him in the top 10 among the backs at the combine.

Also, he bench-pressed 225 pounds 24 times. That would have been the 10th -best effort among the backs at the combine.

Beaver rushed 444 times for 2,455 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior and finished with 6,584 yards and 44 touchdowns.

The Patriots and Colts appear intrigued by Beaver's speed and quickness and his ability to make plays in the open field.

I watched this kid play in the championship game, and he ran like a monster. Not sure how he'll translate into the NFL though...

Glad someone was think like me a nice project player to let faulk teach the ropes if he can snuck on to the PS

Couple years on the PS and then Kevin Faulk's replacement.

If the COLTS are also looking at him, he won't make the Pats practice squad because the Colts will sign him to their roster.

Yes! A long term replacement for Kevin Faulk, the single most under-appreciated cog in oour offense.

Though, I nearly crapped my pants thinking about Tom Brady dropping back and finding, as Kurt Vonnegut would have said, a wide open Beaver.

The Patriots are going to have problems waiving many of their

promising rookies and re-signing them to their practice squad.

In the future, the Pats may have to to reserve a few roster spots

specifically for developmental players.

That's a great point and I think Belichick is already going that way. He used to bring in alot of smaller safety types for ST. Now he is going after WR's and smaller faster players for ST ... Washington and Aiken are 2 recent examples.

Looks like a 7th round pick or UDFA. Might surprise but is in that sleeper category. It's probably pretty easy to rack up big yards in Div 3 though. Heck I didn't even know there was a Div 3.

UW-Whitewater had ana awsome team, knocking off perenial power Mount Union for the championship. There are so many teams in D-III they are thinking of making a D-IV. He is a longshot, but would be a great story. UWW had a WR that was pretty good too.

Just-In Beaver is my porn name so I say draft this kid.

I have a friend of a friend that is like the ALL TIME leader of div 3 rushing,etc...he is about 25, and the guy is....small. I mean I am a big guy, but he is 5'6-7, 180, not sure ANYONE that small is equipped to take the NFL pounding...

why does size matter in the "pounding" contest?

his body can proportionally be made of the exact same things yours can...why would he not be able to take the pounding if he has the same bone strenght, mucle and fat %, and all else?

less surface area i doubt matters...now momentum can have something to do with it though, since mass is included in that, but less S.A. also means harder for defenders to get a good hit....

maurice jones-drew, the human pinball.

short people have better center of gravity, and are easier to store in overhead luggage.

i don't think BB cares about height. if he did, we'd have more six footers for WR and CB.

Luggage . . .

But, seriously, Brady himself made that comment about Welker: he's tough enough to tackle as it is, but he manages to make himself even smaller, so when he's racking up the YAC, his head can be down around most players' waists.

But the poster who said he could be Faulk's replacement might not be far off; they do have fairly similar builds (and, FWIW, his shuttle time is a little faster than Welker's).

Well, maybe its just seeing a guy without pads, having a beer with the guy. No one in the bar would have known he was even a football player. Jones Drew and any shorter RB is built BIG and LOW, and this guy was an athlete but small. Maybe its just seeing him in person like I said....

That cracked my wife and I up!

I'm skeptical as well, but he's the same height/weight as Ray Rice and Justin Forsett, who're certainly legit prospects, so I wouldn't let his frame dissuade me from spending a late pick on him.
