Re: Patriots Select TERRANCE WHEATLEY with 62nd pick

From The Sporting News War Room:

    War Room analysis
Strengths: Is a good athlete, with the quickness, agility and speed NFL teams covet. Shows a quick, compact backpedal, and transitions out of it quickly. Shows loose hips and foot quickness to turn and run with receivers. Shows the ball skills to play the ball and break up passes. Is at his best in man-to-man coverage, staying with receivers all over the field.

Weaknesses: Is short and lacks toughness. Is a much better athlete than football player. Does not play with intensity; is most obvious in his failure to fly upfield to make tackles. Shows questionable tackling technique, and lacks the size and strength to tackle big ballcarriers. Lacks instincts to read plays and react correctly, hindering ability to plant, drive and close on the ball. Is a durability risk after three surgeries on one wrists; the limited flexibility in the wrist does show in his play.

Bottom line: Wheatley's size and unwillingness to tackle is a big concern because most NFL teams use a fair amount of cover-2 looks, requiring cornerbacks to come up and make tackles. Although he has the athletic ability to be a starter, Wheatley is so far from being a polished, competitive player that he will struggle to be more than a nickel back. There also is a reasonable chance he might not pass every team's physical.

Re: Patriots Select TERRANCE WHEATLEY with 62nd pick

he looks fast and it says he excels in man to man coverage. maybe a nickel back?

at least he's fast and we hopefully won't be complaining about cbs being 10 yards off the wr.

don't get me wrong. i'd love to have another lb. we do need a pass rusher to add into the rotation

I think if Kirk Ferentz thought really highly of him he could have convinced BB he was worth the Two. Instead we get one of the fastest College players....In BB you should trust.

Sounds like an Asante-type player from the descriptions. I'm excited about the pick.

Belichick and Pelio have been real good at finding talented CBs Asante in the Fourth, Hobbs in the third, Gay undraftes, and this kid is taken in the 2nd I suspect Beoli think real high of him.

    From the NFL combine site:

:bricks:  Compares to Eliis Hobbs ... :bricks:

    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/terrence-wheatley?id=328

Seriously ... he was considered the top man to man CB ... so in BB I trust and the 3-cone ... Belichick loves that freaking 3-cone. 6.74 ... 2nd fastest CB. Taking averages of the measurables he was like the 3rd all around CB at the combine.

The more I read about this kid the more excited I get about his ability. He is smart, very fast, played multiple positions, has all kinds of accolades mentioned about him by his coach.

Speed cannot teachspeed and he has it - a track star.

Had lots of picks and seems to have a real nose for the ball as he always breaks up pass plays. Says he never misses tackles in the open field. Will contribute from day one as a kick returner.

I think he turns out to be a real good player....maybe the steal of the draft.

It's going to be fun to watch him cover Welker at camp. TW runs about as fast backwards as he does forwards ... like Welker does.

19th best CB according to the non-NFL guys. One of 2 things is going on here:

    1. Incredible reach, or
    2. Media wrong.

He might be the guy they wanted. But damn.

Sure, in BB I trust. Media wrong, therefore, is the answer (or they expected a dozen or more CBs to be picked before they picked again) LOL
