If you all been keeping tabs on the Fins you must have noticed
all the new peices added to bolster their pass attack.

Mike Wallace , Brandon Gibson, Dustin Keller

That is significant improvement. No wonder Ryan Tannehill maybe the
biggest breakout player in the AFC East

AFC East 2013 breakout players - AFC East Blog - ESPN

The Patriots biggest Defensive weakness last year was their Pass D.
Is is coincidental that the Fins are trying to make a significant improvement
to their passing attack? Have the Fins decided that this is
the way to get to the PATS and possibly take over the division.

Question have the PATS really done anything significant to insure a much
better Pass D or are they still trying to get buy on the cheap? Is Re-signing Arrington
and signing A.Wilson enough for a woeful secondary? We need pass rush you say.
OK where is the proven pass rusher they added?

I am going to be disappointed if PATS pass D ends up in the lower 50 percentile.
Prediction: if PATS pass D is not significantly improved they
will not win the division and they may not even make the playoffs.

Patriots pass defense cannot be any worse than it was the last two years.

Doesn't mean anything if they don't upgrade the OL. They only have one tackle right now, and he sucks.

One of the huge issues for the Pats D backfield was maturity and leadership. When we picked up Talib we got much better, but after many pass plays they were talking amongst themselves to discuss what should have happened.

At one point at the beginning of last season our D backfield totalled less than 5 years total NFL experience.. hopefully with another season under the belt and more veteran presence things will get better.

The Dolphins can load up on a bunch of folks, but do they know how to use what they have??..

This is your attempt at trolling right?

First off they made the SB and AFCC in the last two years. So to say if isn't significantly improved they will not win the division or may not make the playoffs is laughable.

Besides the Pats have taken on better QB and WR cores than what Miami has over the past few years and beaten them.

The Patriots also resigned Talib. I think the Phins are giving Tannehill offensive weapons but they did lose their starting LT, starting RB and TE. I, personally, like Fasano more than Keller so I don't think that's an upgrade. They will need to solidify their O-line and hope their QB makes a jump in year two.

As for your prediction, if the Patriots are in the bottom half of the league in pass defense, they will still win the AFCE. Are the Dolphins better? Yes. But I still have faith the Patriots will win their division if their pass defense is the same as last year (29th based on ypg).

It can definitely get worse, believe it or not. Talib made them respectable. It also has to do with the pass rush. Fanboys and fantasy geeks were putting Chandler Jones in the Hall of Fame after a few good games, but then he pulled a disappearing act - 6 sacks through first 8 games then NOTHING NADA ZILCH through final 10 games including playoffs.
So then the Pats decide we're going to address the terrible pass rush with two guys from the Canadian League! What people on this forum don't want to admit/realize is that this defense, statistically one of the worst of ALL TIME through the last few seasons, is not built on the defense itself making plays; it's built on making the opposing offense make mistakes and turnovers. They are top five in the league in +/- every season, but what happens when they play a team their equal or better than them in the playoffs? that team doesn't turn it over (or the Pats turn it over more) and the Pats lose the game.
If the Pats don't have another impressive +/- this season, the OP could be correct....no playoffs and another awful defense that can't make a big play when it is needed...

As for the Patriots, I am more concerned with improving the pass rush than with pass coverage. Signing Henry Melton to play next to Vince Wilfork would have been nice, but that was a dream that never had an opportunity of happening. The Pats can still add a situational pass rushing DE to address the pass rush though.

As for Miami, before we hand them the division crown, let's remember that unlike fantasy football, in the NFL both teams field 11 players at a time. Who is on the line to block for the Dolphins? As of this moment I don't think Tannehill will be able to survive more than half a season from all the hits he is going to take. It doesn't matter how good your receivers are if you're QB is going to be tackled before the receivers have a chance to complete their routes.

    Several things:

    • The Pats never build their team for one opponent even a division opponent. I doubt they are going to build their defense for the Dolphins.
    • The Dolphins still have some big question marks on the o-line, RB, and QB. Giving Tannehill more weapons doesn't mean he will develop into a consistent QB. Tannehill had a mediocre 3294 yards, 12 TDs, and 13 INTs.
    • The Pats' defense should be better with Jones, Hightower, and Dennard getting a full offseason (assuming Dennard doesn't go to jail for any significant time). Talib getting a full offseason with the playbook will also help. A full offseason with McCourty playing safety should also help. This defense should be better with no additions whatsoever.
    • I think Wallace is one of the most overrated WRs in the league. He benefitted from Roethlisberger running around in the backfield for 4-6 seconds to allow Wallace to get open down the field. They played schoolyard football. Will Tannehill have the time with a RT moved to LT or a rookie LT protecting his blindside?

This sounds a lot like how the Buffalo Bills created a menacing pass rush last year that was 100x more devastating than the Giants, all for the sake of destroying Tom Brady and the Patriots offense. We heard all offseason how Williams, Anderson, Dareus, and K Williams would make life a living hell for the Pats and surely win 11+ games.

The Dolphins, like the Bills, found themselves with a lot of cap space this year and decided to throw barrels of cash at players who will bog them down in future years, since their play is nowhere near their contracts. I'm glad they built a paper tiger like the Bills. Ryan Tannehill is Drew Bledsoe 2.0.

well if they do not win the division then only need 2 non division winners.
If they don't win the division I expect they will have 10 or less wins.
    How about,
    Division winners:
    Miami, Denver, Cincinnati,Houston
    other two:
    Indy and Baltimore
Steelers might be an unexpected wild card.

All I'm saying in this thread is I haven't seen significant improvement
this off season by the PATs and there are several teams that may well have improved significantly.

Can you stop with the "PATs" thing. They are not an extra point. It's either PATS or pats

Have you seen significant decline in the Patriots then? They did win 12 games last year.

did you miss the part of this offseason where the dolphins lost their #1 CB, #1 RB and their defensive leader?

I would not belittle the improvements Fins have made to their defense.
They already had a pretty good D. Now they got Vaughn Martin who some here thought PATS should get and Dannell Ellerb who was to replace
Ray Lewis this year. Plus other enhancements. They now have good DL
depth which means an improved rotational component.

Also remember Danny maybe better than Wes in time but I'd be very
cautious about expecting the kind of rapport Wes had with Brady until they have had weeks under game time conditions. This might cost the
    PATS a loss or two.
