There's nothing solid here, but I just heard on WHDH
Ch7 that according to the "sources of this reporter, the
Patriots are in contact with Donte Stallworth"

I don't remember the Sports Reporters name, but that's exactly what he said.

Michael Smith of ESPN is going to be on Sports Final tonite at 11:30,so I think this will be confirmed.

Just thought I'd pass this along.......interesting.

I did the best I could....He's the weekend reporter on WHDH,he's fairly new and I didn't catch his name, but,I assure you that I quoted him correctly.

He did stick his neck out by saying "according to my sources".

He'd be a great pickup from a talent perspective. Does anyone have any insights into his character, work ethic, etc. What I'm asking is if he's a Patriot type of player or not? I don't know enough about him.

If Troy retires, I'd love to have a group of :

    Stallworth - Deep Threat
Welker - 3rd Down and Posession
    Caldwell - Jag, average WR.
    Gaffney - see Caldwell.
    Jackson - potential.

I guess I shouldn't say "love" but it would be an interesting group.

I am not a big fan of stallworth and have said so once our twice here. But he would make all those who feel we need a true deep threat as his average rec. last year was slightly more than 18 yards. and it is for that reason that I have changed my tune on him a bit.

He seemd like a team player while here in Philly, willing to play hurt and didn't disrupt anything. Then again, after TO, it doesn't take much to be an improvement. As for why he's not signed in the first wave, there are durability questions re his hamstring, his agent is Drew Rosenhaus and his demands may have exceeded team's willingness......
When healthy, he was great in the open field with mucho YAC .

    Stallworth Not Attracting Attention?

As scout.com pointed out earlier this week, league sources indicated that free agent WR Donteā€™ Stallworth might not get signed in the early part of free agency because thereā€™s a belief that he wants too much money in signing bonus dollars ($10-$12 million). Sources believe the bonus money will come in much lower ($6-$8 million on a multi-year deal) based on his injury history but as the story goes, it only takes one team to over pay.

Stallworth has not said what exactly he wants in terms of a new contract, and he has been careful to keep the door into the Eagles' locker room propped open even while he has campaigned for a new job. A hefty signing bonus, possibly in the neighborhood of $5 million, is not out of the question, although it's likely Stallworth wants much, much more.

Maybe the Welker deal fell through after their meeting today.

    From Mercury news

Stallworth has not said what exactly he wants in terms of a new contract, and he has been careful to keep the door into the Eagles' locker room propped open even while he has campaigned for a new job. A hefty signing bonus, possibly in the neighborhood of $5 million, is not out of the question, although it's likely Stallworth wants much, much more.

Last year, Antwaan Randle El signed a seven-year deal with Washington worth a reported $31 million, including $11.5 million in bonuses. David Givens got a reported $8 million signing bonus as part of his five-year, $24 million deal with Tennessee. And Keyshawn Johnson got $5 million up front from Carolina as part of his four-year, $14 million contract.

Randle El, Givens and Johnson, like Stallworth, are considered second-tier receivers.

After a nasty contract dispute with New England ended with an in-season trade to Seattle, Deion Branch got a $7 million signing bonus in his new contract with the Seahawks. His base salary for 2006 was $2.1 million.

The average of the top five salaries for receivers for this season is $7,613,000.

Stallworth obviously won't touch that figure. He was nagged by a hamstring injury during last season and did not crack the top 30 in receiving yards. Stallworth's reputation league-wide is not the strongest - he has never made it through an entire season and has not yet had a 1,000-yard season - although the Eagles had no problems last season with his attitude or performance.

Still, Eagles general manager Tom Heckert said last week that, like last year, they are prepared to go into the 2007 season with the receivers they have under contract. That would mean that Reggie Brown and Hank Baskett will be the Eagles' starters, with Jason Avant and Greg Lewis in the rotation.

Stallworth was the Birds' deep threat, but they apparently feel that Baskett will continue to improve in his second season and that Avant has a similar upside.

Obviously there's no Jerry Rice there, but that really would be one of the best WR lineups Brady's ever had (including Watson, Thomas and Faulk), assuming Stallworth stays healthy.

Caldwell and Gaffney are now proven complementary commodities, who's production will only be better if there are more receiving threats around them.

Stallworth and Welker - while they will need to work on timing in camp, are proven commodities also.

Overall I don't think its every been fully appreciated what some of the previous deep threats like Patten and even Tim Dwight meant to the other players around them. Stallworth's contributions would go well beyond the 30 passes for 600 yards he'd easilly bring to the table.

that would be great if we got him. His speed is like...i cant explain. Hes very fast. Hes a threat all the time. Concerns are injuries really. If we get him i rather not get rid of our 2nd rounder.

i wish NFL was like Madden ..i would trade 1st and 2nd for Anquan Boldin :) but since i cant..might aswell go for someone like Stallworth in fA.

    imagine future

    Brady delivering to
Stallworth - deep speed, big play threat
Jackson - great hands, great speed, big body
Caldwell - He did alright as a #1..he could be a really good #3 WR :)
Gaffney - yes he played well but theres competition now..he cant keep up with Stall-Jax

if we do indeed get Stallworth and WELKER..then im going to be really worried about Chad

I just sent an email to Larry Ridley asking if he would identify his sources on the Stallworth story.

    If he answer's.....I'll post it.
