Did Stanback get infected by part of the locker room cancer that the team is now trying to radiate and kill?

No, he just wasn't going to beat out Hoyer and Robinson at QB, or all the folks at WR.

Stanback seemed like a good kid but he was never going to make the team. Between the draft and a few IRs/FA the roster will be tons stronger at the bottom this year.

Not much news here but I met Isaiah at circuit city and he was a really nice guy and stayed and talked football for a minute so I kind of feel bad for him and hope he catches on somewhere else.

Stanback made some nice catches last year that extended drives, but he obviously wasn't going to beat out Price, Tate and Edelman.

Yeah the first thing I noticed when I read that was that they announced the signing of LB Derrick Burgess.

If Stanback was a clubhouse problem he would have been cut long before now (cancers far down the depth chart don't last long). In fact, the timing tells me they like the kid and want to give him a chance to catch on somewhere else. Having gone through the draft and the FA period they now have a pretty good picture of their WR corps and the numbers just don't add up for Isaiah to be on the final roster.

...and glad that the Derrick Burgess deal was formally announced. Given weeks between twitter and tweat, there is always some risk that it falls apart.

    Disable Jersey

I was at games behind the bench. The guy was an enthusiastic sideline guy and huddled with the QBs to pick up intelligence even while inactive in street clothes. Great attitude. Wish him the very best.

Would not be surprised if JMcD gives him a look at WR. Bronks are a bit thin there...

No offense but why would signing Burgess make you glad? Did you see him play last year? God awful.

He looked very tight in a Patriot's uniform ... he looked the part anyways.

It's not his fault he's just not a 3-cone kind of guy ... or the shuttle ... or any of it.

Yeah. I had heard that he was primarily a DE as well.

For the first part of the season, I'll agree with you.. But, he came on strong towards the 2nd half of the season and, it's my belief, that his improvement relates directly to TBC being able to put up more sacks...

IIRC, TFB even gave him some props in last year, saying he noticed the kid could really catch, so that's why they tried him in WR...something to that effect. Best of luck to him!

Although I'll also take this as a small sign that depth at WR is looking up this year! :D

While the focus of comments thus far has been on the depth chart at WR, I'm thinking this has as much or more to do with the depth chart on Special Teams. Perhaps a sign Stanback is not as valuable as Price, Tate, and others as a WR/ST roster spot, and McCourty, McKenzie, Hernandez and others can upgrade special teams in his place even though they are officially manning other positions.

I suppose this helps Aiken and Arrington since they are primarily special teamers, but it's still way too early to figure out the week one roster.

That's what it tells me, too. I wish, though, that Bill had kept both he & Bruce Davis until at least the next OTAs in June. After all, Tate & Crable could IR themselves (again) at any moment.

If he's persistent, I think he can stick somewhere. Edelman is a total freak, no one can be expected to transition like that. Stanback is a good looking athlete.

I am a BIT surprised...I think more that Stanback could play WR as well as an Emergency QB...I think that has been overlooked in the dicussion.....I guess the 3rd would go now to Edelman...unless they plan on keeing 3...I wish him the very best...I agree Chiefs/Broncs..someone will take him. As far as Davis went...a numbers game at LB...someone had to go.

As has been noted before, this means that Edelman is actually one of the two QBs dressed on game day, and if Brady comes out before the end of the third quarter, Edelman has to play the remaining snaps at QB until then, or he has to come out of the game too.

Stanback was a QB until he was signed as an UDFA by the Cowboys back in 2007. They spent two years transitioning him to WR; the Patriots initially signed him with the intention of developing him at QB again, but injuries forced them to move him back to WR.

[Translation: Edelman came further in one year than Stanback did in two.]
