As you probably know, the Chargers gave up their second-round draft pick in 2009 so they could draft Jacob Hester (whose only contribution in the SD game was to cough up a fumble :D).

Well, after seven weeks, the standings look like this (ranked by SOS in each group):

    No wins: DET, CIN
    1 win: KC, SEA
2 wins: SF, MIA, OAK, STL, CLE
3 wins: HOU, SD, NO, MIN

So, currently, the Chargers have the #11 pick in the first round. Because of the way the draft works, that gives the Pats the #42 pick overall in 2009, plus a fifth-rounder in 2008, for the #69 pick overall.

If that stands up, the Pats can get a very nice player at #42. But the Chargers can also draft a gamechanger at #11 (Their GM is actually smart). So I guess that balances out. With the talent the Chargers have, it's hard to see them finishing under .500 though.

Chargers SHOULD end up atleast 8-8.

Too good of a team to be any worse than that. Their problem is IMMATURITY.

They have too many youngsters on the team and not enough veterans. They always seem to let them go via FA (Donnie Edwards, Rodney Harrison, Junior Seau, Drayton Florence).

LT is a cry baby. Horrible leader. And they lost their leader on Defense, Merriman.

Chargers can draft - thats for sure. I really can't think of anyone else that has done a better job than them over the last 7 years.

The Chargers have melted down in the face of adversity in the past. I agree they have a talented roster, but they are facing a difficult season, 3-4, with three of the four coming on the road. Their biggest advantage is being in the AFCW.

They can draft, but they don't hold on to their players and don't bring in any veteran help during the free agency.

If they had the leadership that the Pats have, they would be the best team in the league right now. All I see is a bunch of kids who want to be super stars with no discipline.

Well thanks to the Patriots, the Chargers are a game and a half behind the Broncos (Bronco's won the first head to head game, well technically they "won" the game, but the Chargers got the "currizo" from Ed Hockuly with the non-fumble call). Does anyone here not think that the Chargers are going to finish ahead of the Broncos? The Chargers will win the west (Chiefs, Raiders? anyone, anyone?), the best you can hope for is a 9-7 record. but even then, they would pick last amoungst all of the 9-7 teams, and (assuming they don't make the Superbowl) the second round pick will only be one more up from the bottom of the 9-7 group. I would be shocked if the pick ends up anywhere below #50. Anyway you look at it, it is a minus 50 draft trade for the Patriots using the draft trade vaule charts.

The way we have drafted over the current years, i dont have faith in the picks. This team needs to draft a young safety and some more LBs.I am still waiting for some action out of Shawn Crable:rolleyes:

The problem with the last few Patriots drafts, is that they are still drafting like a rebuilding team (which they did a great job of doing) trading down, amassing later round picks. The last two draft classes have shown that their is not that much room on this roster for later round picks. The Pats need to start trading away those second day picks to get higher in the first round and/or multiple picks in the second (actually they should just trade out of the second rd altogether, because they seem only to find complete busts there lately) and thrid rounds. Honestly did anyone here think that Bo Rudd, or whatever his name was, was going to make this team? Our late round picks have become a quasi practice squad for the Jets.

Right now we draft 25th. I predict by the end of the season that drops to #32.

I had #23, but I think I might have screwed up the spreadsheet I'm using; I'll have to look at that tonight.

Looking at the schedule for SD, I see 8-8 or 9-7 if they stay healthy. Which is a big if, as we know all to well.

Tomlinson and Gates are playng on 1 bad wheel already and Rivers is more at risk the more he has to throw.

Could Denver actually win that division? Ugh!

SD schedule, predictions based on today's roster:

    Sun 9/7 Carolina L 24-26
    Sun 9/14 at Denver L 38-39
    Mon 9/22 NY Jets W 48-29
    Sun 9/28 at Oakland W 28-18
    Sun 10/5 at Miami L 10-17
    Sun 10/12 New England W 30-10
    Sun 10/19 at Buffalo L 14-23
Sun 10/26 at New Orleans 1:00 pm LOSS
    bye
Sun 11/9 Kansas City 4:15 pm WIN
Sun 11/16 at Pittsburgh 4:15 pm LOSS
Sun 11/23 Indianapolis 8:15 pm ???? They play well vs. Indy.
Sun 11/30 Atlanta 4:05 pm WIN
Thu 12/4 Oakland 8:15 pm WIN
Sun 12/14 at Kansas City 1:00 pm WIN
Sun 12/21 at Tampa Bay 8:15 pm LOSS
Sun 12/28 Denver 4:15 pm WIN

#23 is correct, the one thing that you can be assured of, is that the Patriots will have the weakest "Strenth of Schedule" of all the teams in the NFL! The SOS is used to break ties in the draft order of teams with the same won-loss record. It is the second tie-breaker (first is playoff verus non-playoff team). So is they don't win the SB they will pick ahead of any other team with thier identical won-loss record (assuming all teams either made, or didn't make the playoffs, whichever the case may be) in the first round.

This is what the first round would look like today:

Yeah, exactly. I wouldn't root for the Chargers pick to get too good for the reason you state here - it'll just let them get that much more talent. Who knows when that talented batch of morons get it together, but I'd hate for them to get a top 15 talent.

Something in the 20s would be nice, and therefore, 50s for us. Then we'd have picks in the 30, 50 and 60 range. Nice balance, flexibility to move up or down.

You might be right. I just sorted at NFL.com and assumed they took care of the tie breakers for me. They do for the div.

You guys keep forgetting the draft pick that Pats will get for Asante Samuel. With tthe contract he signed. that will be a third round pick.

    So 1 #1s, 2 #2s and 2#3s, 1 #4s

Think of a four round high pick Defensive draft. And also a two round high pick pick Offensive draft.

    On D: ILB/OLB, CB, DL

    On O: OT, and OG

I'm not really forgetting it; it's just that there's no point in trying to "track" it, since it's basically guaranteed to be somewhere between 97 and 100, most likely 97.
