[And, for the record, the rule is three weeks if you sign a player off another team's PS.]

What a strange report. How would Garoppolo have gotten injured? Practice?

It happens. Heck, someone knocked Ken Walter out cold once in pre-game warmups (that was the game where the Pats kept going for it on fourth down).

Maybe the Pats are preparing for the possibility that the Buffalo game is a meaningless game (the Pats lock up HFA the week before if the Pats win the next two and the Broncos lose one of the next two) and resting Brady that game. If so, they will need a back up for Jimmy G if he gets hurt.

If they are planning that, they probably don't want to sign someone off the street or another practice squad that week. They would want them to learn a little about the offense before the game.

The only way a healthy Brady doesn't play at all in that game is if they sedate him.

LOL! Even if he doesn't sit out the entire game, they could pull him before half time and they still would want another QB active so if Jimmy G gets hurt, Brady doesn't have to go back in.

#Bears could have considered other options after placing Sharpton on IR, but #Patriots were trying to sign QB David Fales off prac squad.

Wonder if Jimmy G is a little dinged up. Fales would have had to stay on our 53 for 4 weeks.
Fales is just a promising player. If we could grab him we could potentially get something in return down the road.

They may be considering trading Garopollo if they had an offer for a top 10 pick. (Seems unlikely however).

If there's ever a QB you think might have promise who is available for minimal investment, then it makes sense to try to get him. As somebody said in response to the Easley to IR rumor, the Pats aren't really hurting for roster spots right now. If they were to put Easley on IR, then they still have enough DT depth to let them fill that roster spot with something other than a DT, for example.

In 2005, Brady played barely one quarter in the season ender against Miami. (he was 3-8 for 37 yds). So it's possible he wouldn't play much. But you're right, he'd probably start, at least.

It just seems strange, though, since the Patriots have shown no interest in even having a PS QB the last three seasons, let alone carry a third QB.

Gronkowski is another one I would limit reps for in that game, depending on circumstance of course.

Perhaps explains the Easly to IR possibility.

I don't consider this very likely. In the off chance that JG does get hurt, NE will just put Brady back in without any hesitation. You just don't invest three weeks of a roster spot just in case the last week is meaningless and just in case the backup QB gets hurt in said meaningless game. It's like taking out a three week asteroid insurance policy.

The only real explanation is they think this QB I've never heard of is worth developing.

The report of the saints being down on Brees and regretting not taking a qb last year comes to mind...

I was a big fan of Fales going into the draft and was hoping the pats would grab him in the later rounds. Glad we have JG now but thought of possibly having both of these youngins had me real hot and bothered.

Also, Odell Beckham was my favorite wr in the draft. *still waiting patiently for phone call with NFL job offering*
